all motor(i think)
i have a 98 GSR with around 82,000 miles on it, and i was wondering(it might be a stupid question) if i get skunk 2 stage 1 cams, skunk 2 gears, and skunk2 valvesprings and retainers will i be ok??? id rather save the money from spending on bolt ons that give minimal hp gains anyway and purchase something that is much more worth it than i/h/e etc.....is it extremely necessary to tune with a VAFC or the Fields VTEC controller???? im on a "college" budget but still modify my car and keep it fun(without spending crazy chedda on a turbo kit)also, if this above setup is possible, what FPR do you guys recommend?? B&M??? AEM???......hit me back with some ideas.....thanks much....holla back son
im guessing right now you have no bolt ons, stock intake, exhaust manifold, cat and exhuast?
skunk2 stage 1's, cam gears, valve springs and retainers will definetly make more power in your car, but the stock exhaust manifold ("header") cat and exhaust are going to be really restrictive.
id rather get an intake, header/cat and exhaust, that way the car is ready for the better valve train.
heres a break down
Cams $675
Cam gears $175
Valvesprings $250
Retainers $165
Total = $1265 (give or take a hundred depending on where u get it, new or used)
plus install which is at least $400-500 for all that stuff.
AEM $185
JDM 4-1 $375
Toda/DTR/SMS/Hytech $900-1300
Cat $150-200
Exhaust $250-450
Total = $1000-$1700 (depending what header u use)
bolt ons are simple to put on and you can do it urself
so for just a little more, u would make more power by opening up the engine and then later you could add the valvetrain stuff.
just my opinion..

so it pointless then to to all the valvetrain stuff without doing the header and exhuast???when spoon modify their cars, they usually keep the factory airbox but change only the header and exhaust rite?........about how much is tuning for the valvetrain stuff and how much more will it effectively(and efficiently) increase my power(with VAFC2)...also, ive been torn between getting a greddy turbo kit and staying all motor for some time now. any ideas??? i have the idea of modifying my motor a lot more even if the kit is "bolt on"......i feel that i should stay all motor with a honda, but for the money and horsepower gains involved it is ver tempting
ahhhhhh!!!!!!my mind changes again(not really)....to be more exact, i think i just want i/h/e, cat, dog(it tastes pretty good), pulleys, exedy clutch, act or fidanza flywheel, and VAFC2 or Fields.....and thats it for my car.....im at the point in my life(sorry to say) where im kinda getting bored of modifying(or just reading magazines at bookstores about cars) and kinda want my next car to be already the way i want it....maybe in a year or 2 ill get an EVO.....or whatever is good then(definitely turbo)......peace
actually isnt the hondata s100 much cheaper than a VAFC2??? i dont have much time on my hands to tune it myself(and im not sure how to anyway)and isnt the s100 vtec engagement non adjustable??? would all those bolt ons plus and the hondata s100 with tuning make a big difference??? remember that im not out to have the fastest car, just a car that is fun and that screams VTEC when i hit the gas....lmao
