Default DYNO'd my B18C5...very pleased.

Well, I took my car to Engineered Performance in Smyrna, GA to see what my R motor would put to the rollers on the dyno. My mods:

AEM CAI for 99 Civic Si
STOCK USDM R exhaust manifold
Tanabe Racing Medallion
B&M FPR (came on motor, not my choice)
STR fuelrail (came on motor also, not my choice again)
Skunk2 camgears set @ +2, -1 (not tuned on dyno, just set there when I installed them)
KENJI-tech re-programmed P28 ECU
ACT Xtreme clutch w/hybrid street disc.

Internally STOCK though, USDM cams, etc. I consider my set-up to be STOCK, so I was stoked to see this:

175.2whp? I could not believe it. This is a 98 USDM motor, which we know has the weaker cams as opposed to JDM and USDM 00-01 motors.

My best torque was 123ft/lbs, which was better than my TUNED GS-R swap before. That one pushed out 122.

Is this normal, or do I have a reason to be happy?

I've got a V-AFC to be installed soon and then we're going to tune it again with the wide-band 02 sensor, and Ed @ the dyno says he can really clean up that not-so-good low-end and VTEC dip areas.

LATE.

I understand the need to tune the motor. "Looks like ***" sounds really nice. I did a search and it seems that with my very few mods and STOCK R manifold 175whp is pretty good, no?

I've done searches on headers of course, and there is NO definate answer on this issue. I will NOT spend the $900-$1,200 for a damn header that I see others do - I simply CAN'T afford to. The choices are JDM 4-1 or the DC JDM header. Or should I even switch?

And then theres cams...jeez, this is just as hard to decide on as the header issue. I'm thinking Toda B's or JUN 3's, but again I haven't seen good numbers around my area for cams - yet. There are a few in the ATL area running Toda B's, but have yet to tune them in, which I know is CRITICAL. I'm leaning towards the B's, but the money will not be here for a WHILE.

What kind of gains do you guys think I could see in my low and midrange with PROPER tuning utilizing my V-AFC, camgears, FPR, etc. and the wide-band 02 and all?

Thanks for any help/info.

Oh and lastly, do not think that I'm someone obsessed with PEAK hp numbers. It's just the first thing that jumps out when you look at dyno sheets, that's all. If I can keep the 175whp or even get to 180whp but really gain a lot in the low and pre-VTEC DIP range, i'd be very happy.

Thought I'd clear that up.

Cool... Next week we should have a whole bunch of baseline dyno reports to throw at you.. after the Motorwerks dyno day.. My car is absolutley bone stock..

I have opened the hood only to clean and check the oil.. I'd fall right out of my car if I got over 165 whp...

your car is still not a integra type-R. High demand of engine swaps is the reason a lot of integra type-R's go missing in the states.

If i were I would broadcast I had a c5 block under the hood. b/c if it was me, i'd destroy your car.
And this is his fault how? I'd like to destroy YOU!

He's prolly pissed about all the ITR's getting stolen and chopped up for parts which is understandable but no need to take it out on this poor guy.

Get that VAFC and retune. You lost about 20hp from 5-6.5k. otherwise it looks good.

Tom - nice numbers. If you care to know, I put down 162.7 whp and 12x lb-ft of torque at the same dyno in June at Engineered on my bone stock B18C5. So, your 10+HP gain with those mods are pretty good! I've got a few bolt-on's going on the car before ATL dyno day in december. We'll see how different pieces dyno.

-Sean

p.s. BTW, how was the autoX yesterday at the Ted?

I dyno'd there also. Stock was like 160hp and 140 lbs. After mods it went to 200.1 hp and 165 lbs.

What mods do you have to gain 40.1 whp? That's a lot of NA mods or you've got a S/C.

Hey guys, don't break his *****.

Instead of acting like ******** and just saying what's wrong with his chart... how bout tell him how he can improve it?

Here, watch this:

Nice looking dyno, but the midrange needs a little work.
If you don't have a V-AFC or SFC-Fields yet, you should look into one.
Move your VTEC transition to 5000rpm or so. Go richer in the fuel from 4000-7000, and lean the **** out of it from 7000+. You'll see what happens.

BTW, my friend's motor had VERRRRY similar results to yours. Wanna know what happened after the SFC-Fields?
181 and 126 at the wheels. One nice line, no spikes.

go to dynocenter.com
there are a few R's with different mods like JDM header.
Try advancing your intake cam 1 more deg. to gain some more midrange.
Don't waste your money on VAFC if you have stock cams.

He's a GSR owner and wishes he had ITR cams Any car that has been modified or has a ECU should look into one of these items. The skunk2 ecu is an out of the box unit that everyone uses on tons of different setups. It basically just make your **** super rich and gives you some nice timing curves. The VAFC allows you to tailor this to your car regardless of wether you have cams or not. But the R cams are somewhat aggressive compared to other stock honda cams so it would be worthwhile.

I wish you had an A/F plot to look at with the dyno run. I could be of more assistance then.
The end of the graph, 7500-8500 looks a little rough. Is that timing of or fuel related? Are you running a base timing of 16 plus the Kenji ECU, or base of 18 plus his ECU?

My friend Eric from ATL has a 98 ITR with Toda Bs. Last time i talked to him he seemed happy with them but still working it out and tunning it. No dyno runs yet though. Do you know him EG6? He used to work at Godfather customs?

I wish i had more tunning on my EG. Its got a 95 B18c1 with Aem cold air, Dc 4-2-1 2 peice, and a custom 2 1/2" custom piping exhaust, and ITR fuel pump. The guy that dynoed it at Nopi stopped the dyno at 7400rpm with peak HP being 154 and the peak torque at 118. I cant wait to change some of these things out and see some real hp!

Well, the ITR might respond different to VAFC, but I have seen many frustrated GSR owners only gain 1-2 whp after paying $600 for VAFC, installiion and tuning. I am only trying to help out and save his hard wroking money

Good point, but I believe the V-AFC will work wonders in his particular application. B18C1 has a smooth chart as is. ITR is more "spikey". The V-AFC gets rid of this.

On the B18C1, your only real gain is the fuel mapping, which will nest 4-5hp MAX.
But on a B18C5 the VTEC point knocked down to 4800-5200 makes an amazing difference.

Mike's right on target here...you'll probably still gain midrange even going to +4 intake & you'll end up ~ -8to-12% fuel at 8000rpm (causing a gain of 6-8 horse after peak to bring that huge dip back up to near peak levels to redline).

I've tuned on two different dynos & have similar setup
