Default GSR cams in B16, vtec engagement? worth it?

I might have the opportunity to get my friend's GSR cams for very cheap maybe close to free, and I'm probably picking up his LMA's as well, so my questions are, first do you think its worth it, they're going on a nearly stock JDM b16a1 and it won't be tuned for now, I plan on purchasing a set of Rocket's m22's and valvetrain towards the end of the summer but I thought the gizzers might be fun till then, so do you think its worth it?

Second, should I invest in a vtec controller for now, to move the engagement to match the cams or would it be different because I don't have the dual stage runners, I plan on getting hondata when I start going somewhere w/ this motor but it seemed pointless now. Opinions, comments, flames welcome

They will make a difference... for what you are (or are not) paying... they would be worth it even w/o tuning. Once you dial them in, you will see better power gains.

if its free, you might as well take em', sell em'(turbo guys love gsr cams), and keep the paper. but, if you have to pay for the lma's and the cams, and pay for the install, or diy, it seems like a waste to me. for the 2hp that your are going to get, i wouldn't waste 3-4 hours out of my weekend to do it. as for the lma issue, from what i know, they (b16a & b18c1) are the same. if anything, his lma's might have less mileage then your jdm one's, but, my friend ran low 11's (n/a) years ago, and he never changed them in his head. he had b series 2.1L vtec with a 10,800 shift point. with that said, its your choice.

I guess in the FI forum they dropped GSR cams on a turbo'd B16 and saw nice gains, I wondered if they would still be worth it in a naturally aspirated motor

I definitly won't be paying to have them installed, so the only cost would only be what I pay for the cams and LMAs

Lastly I believe that ITR and GSR LMAs are the same but B16's are different and from what I understand the B16a1 LMAs are not very good, there was a writeup about LMAs on here or Rocket's forums not too long ago

Edit: the writeup was on H-T, but it was done by Rocket - https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=571523

GSR cams are worth it. Some people will say they are the same as B16's, but many people with the proper tools say otherwise. http://www.crower.com shows GSR cams with more lift on the intake, 1 degree less on the exhaust, and more duration on both. Go for it.

i had them in my b16a2 it felt a little better it was worth the $50. if you can get them for a good cheap then do it and when its time to move on to a better cam there not hard to sale.
