I'm on 100,637 miles right now on the car. My father and I are going to replace the timing belt ourselves (he will not have any trouble at all doing it.)

Right now farming season just picked up again, so he doesn't have the time to do it. In a few months he will have the time, but I may have already run another 3,000+ miles on the car.

The question is, is it fine to keep running it like this? Honda wants it replaced at 90,000~, but it hasn't been done. And the honda dealer is charging $472~ to do the belt, I don't have that kind of money.

Another question, everyone whom changed their's around this time, did you have any signs of wear on it? I'm sort of worried about it.

And when we do it, mabye I'll take pictures and do a write up along the way.

I've seen belts that have "looked" ok at your mileage. I guess it kinda depends if the engine has had any oil leaks around the t-belt area, if the engine has ever overheated etc. I think you should at least pop the top cover off and take a peak inside at the belt to check it's condition. I would recommend that you replace the cam, crank and balance shaft seals, tensioner pulleys and the water pump while you are in there. It may sound like alot of extra work and expense, but you will have saved yourself alot of headaches down the road. good luck! pm me if you have any more questions.

 

IT SHOULD BE FINE TO REPLACE THE TIMIMG BELT AROUND 105,00 MILES.
WOULDNT HURT TO ADJUST THE VALVES THEN TOO.

Better a belt now then a new head and valve assembly later

I am sure there's some car go over 100k without a belt, but the question to ask is that do you wanna to bet your engine on it

 

well, I'll pull the upper Timing belt casing off tomorrow morning, and take a look. I could probably just start doing the work now, and just let it take a week or so :/ I can drive the old F150 till then.

 

i'm gettin timing belt and water pump and stuff replaced here in the next month, once school is out in 2 weeks. also need to get my oil seal replaced, because tahts about to go as well.

I understand not having the money...that's why I have 203,000 on mine and haven't changed it yet. But don't use my good blessing as a normal example, change it ASAP.

 

holy crap man! that's like driving a grenade with the pin pulled! i betcha that belt is sooo glazed and cracked! actually, i guess you could make it that long, but it kinda depends on the age of the belt too. i think i saw somewhere that Honda recommends that a t-belt be changed at 60 months iregardless of mileage.

 

you should replace it. the problem is you really don't know when it would break. if it does break chance are it will cost you more than $472 to fix it. if you plan on keeping the car for a more years it's worth it.

just fix it.

 

Spend the $500 now, or the 2K later......pretty simple. Did my 92 lX myself, days worth the work with a good shop manual and the proper tools.
