Life Expectance of SOHC VTEC engine
i have a SOHC VTEC motor and it has about 200k on it. i plan on doing the internals over a period of time, ie-pistons, cams, shafts, valve springs ect. but i want to know will the block last me or what? i don't want to hear go b series, i can't afford it right now. i want to build up the sohc and boost it. but will it last me? and what type of things can i take apart and look for? thanks for any help.
Buy your internals and stock pile them, then once you have everything you want to install take the motor out and do it. It's much easier to do everything at once than to constantly be removing and installing an engine.
I'd say, take DanW's advice. Buy slowly and then when you have everything, put it all together.
As far as your current motor lasting a while, that's hard to say. Take care of it, do the regular maintanence on it and you should be fine. What are the compression numbers? Is it burning oil? Anything leaking out of where nothing should be leaking?
As far as saying, "don't tell me go B-series, I can't afford it." Why not? Like I said, if you slowly stockpile your upgrades, a B-series won't be much at all. Think about it, if you're planning to build and boost, you can get everything separately. Get a bare LS block. You won't need anything in there anyway. Those should be like $100 or so. If you're building it up, then all the internals you will be buying will replace everything in the motor anyway.
After that, get a stock LS head. I have seen several for free, and some for $50 max. I gave away two LS heads a while ago. Full complete heads too. The head isn't the weak point in a turbo system, so you can basically leave that stock. Just have it reconditioned when you put everything back together. Work on the block.

is a LS block and head a B series? sorry, im a noob. and the engine runs fine, doesn't burn oil, no leaks, duno the compression. that sounds better, buy the block and build it. thanks for the advice guys. i bought the car with almost 200k on it, the chasis is perfect, everything in it works. btw, if i build ls block will i need to get a new ecu and tranny? its not a problem if i do, just will take awhile. again, thanks for the advice

How about this... you buy a used D-16 for 200.00, and re build it. Then once its completed, you drop it in one Saturday and your set. You can sell your old motor to pay your self back for buying the motor you rebuilt. Even with forged internals, it will be cheaper than a B series swap. In fact if you shop around, you can get it sleeved, and still be comparable in price to a swap.

Don't get me wrong....in the end, the B-series will cost you more than just building up a D-series motor. But like I said, since you are slowly building it, you can slowly buy parts. Take your time with it. A full turbo build basically needs everything replaced anyway.
Yes, an LS motor is a Bseries motor. It's a B18B1. And yes, unfortunately, you will need a B-series tranny if you go this route eventually. But like I said. Yes, new ECU too. It's basically a totally different motor. Remember though, LS parts aren't as espensive as DOHC Vtec parts (i.e.: GSR, ITR, etc).
Looks like your old motor is fine. Just take care of it and buy the parts you need for your new project.
My B-series thing is just a suggestion. I see you are new to this, and I just wanted to point out that an LS setup won't run you THAT much.

i just figured it would be easier to build up my engine that i have now instead of doing a swap, but if i do a swap i think i'll just build one up. i like the idea of building up a b series. one of my friends told me i was crazy. said it would be too fast and way too fast for me.

Too fast? No such thing as too fast.
Anyway, listen.....it's going to be hard to build up what you have now. How are you going to do that? There will be lots of downtime since everything has to come apart, sent to the machine shop, be put back together, tuned, etc.
Do you have another car to drive around in the meantime? That's why I was suggesting getting parts like that. If you think you can't honestly afford the B-series in the long run, then get a D-series like one guy said. You can get a pretty much complete one for like $300-500. Build that then.

They should lst a long time if taken good care of. We had one a while back that came through the shop with 650,000 miles.

what kind of price difference would it be to buy a b series block and build it compared to buying a d series and building it?i figure if i can get 300+ out of my engine now it'll give me plenty of time to save and build another motor.
Maybe this will help with life expectancy a bit...
I have a SOHC with 300,000 on it and it runs fine...doens't burn oil, no leaks...perfect. The only flaw w/ my SOHC is when the vtec kicks in, I really don't feel it much lol.
Of course that's with proper maintenance.

yeah, the engine seems to run good, no burning oil, good gas mileage, i try to take care of it. thing is, i dont know how the original owner treated it. i bought it from a mexican at my friends work, he works at a dealership, apparently the guy treated it like a baby.
i have a 98 Sohc Vtec engine for sale. 80,xxx miles $500.
New: Polished Valve Cover

honestly man, i think it depends on if you can afford all the downtime. if you have another car to drive- awesome, start buying parts for the d series tonight. if not, then you might want to look into getting a bare block (b or d series) and then putting the engine together piece by piece in your free time. when its done, swap it in
yeah, i think im just going to buy a block and build it. its just figuring out what i need and getting the help doing it. never thought about the buy and build. **** it, i want a jet engine. rolls royce v12 or v24. lol, thanks dudes

lol.
As for your build question. You seem new to Honda world and maybe new to the whole build idea. Sit back think about what you need and how much your willing to spend.
Then research those ideas through h-t and find out which is the best way to go for your needs. Do you wanna autox or drag or street race *ooops* anyways figure these things out first....it will save you all kinds of money in the end.
