anyone change the cv joint
i bought the whole axle awhile back ,but never gotthe chance to change it and i THINK it needs to be done, what do i have to do after i take off the axle nut? any pics? oh this is on my 97 civic ex. it used to make a tin can sound when i was going real slow or turning so i figured it was the cv joint, checked the boot but it was fine si i could be wrong
Changing a CV boot is easy. I don't have any pics, but I did one about a month ago. Go to a Honda dealer and get a CV boot kit... they're $30, comes with new boot, new clamps, new grease... everything you need.
It would help if you had a Helm's manual, but if you don't, here is a basic run down: take the axle nut off, take the wheel off, take the ball joint off the rotor, swing the rotor assembly up to get the axle out of the rotor, then pull the axle out of the tranny. Now, you want to undo the old clamps and separate the two pieces (note: I only know this for the inner CV boot). Be careful taking them apart, since the little disc things can fall out. once apart, make note of which way the discs go. Then you need to take off the thing the discs sit on, so you can take off the old boot and get the new one on. Once you get that off and the new boot on, spread the grease everywhere and reverse the steps.
I wish I could give you the more technical names, but I don't remember and don't have my book with me. You'll understand the thing about the discs when you get it apart. If you need a pic of it all, IM me and I can snap a pic from my Helm's manual.
