Problem hearing i-vtec in EP3
OK hears the deal...ever since i bought my car last year (02 civic si) i've noticed that its vtec isnt as loud and dramatic as the previous model and recently i've added an intake to amp the sound but all im getting is a louder engine with no noticeable vtec roars. is that normal with the new ep3s? am i alone here??
Please drop a response if you kno anything cuZ im getting worried my car mite have a serious vtec problem.... HELP ME PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Your car doesnt have TRUE vtec thats why. You only have one vtec solenoid. Its basically economy vtec. There is no real crossover. Its kicks in at 2200rpm and is barely noticable if at all. There is nothing wrong with your car. Your motor just blows thats all.

Not to worry. It's normal.
The K20A3 in the EP3 is quieter and more refined than both the i-VTEC in the Type S and the older VTEC in cars like the GS-R, the B16A Si, and the ITR.
You still have 160 HP and you still have a hell of alot more torque down low than the older VTEC cars.

No Way? isnt the ep3 supposed to have enormous potential?
Well how about this... if i were to get a vtec controller.... could i program it to kick in like the older vtecs and be able to hear it as well??

a3 motors are only rockin with 2 cam lobes per valve instead of 3, like a2's and a's ... also like previous VTEC motors. There's no vtec at all on the exhaust cam either ... a3 vtec is comparable to the em2's sohc vtec
gotta love ep's -_-;;;

You guys have ghetto economy vtec. More refined my ***. Your car is just a 12 valve engine below 2200 rpms. At 2200 all 16 of your valves are opened. The base carriers a derivative of VTEC-E (E for economy not extra special) to save gas and produce low emissions. Real VTEC is when the engine changes over to a different cam lobe that works better at higher RPM's. I have nothing against base or SI guys, but when I hear these douches go on about how they have more refined VTEC it angers me. GET OFF YOUR SOAP BOX!

ok so i have a shitty engine, no offense taken, i still think its the ****, but you still havent answered my question...will a vtec controller allow me to adjust the vtec to where i can hear it similar to the older Si's?

Adjusting your VTEC point to a higher RPM to just hear the sound wouldn't be too good for your engine. Honda set it to that point for a reason. If you do choose to increase the VTEC engagement point, you will be making less power than you already have, in your case atleast. You could seriously mess up your motor is you decide to do this. Sound does not equal performance.
The vtec in the A3 is indeed like vtec-e. There is nothing to be gained from adjusting the crossover. On the bright side, the A3 has a smoother torque curve.
If you think your A3 vtec kicks in, read this: http://www.superhonda.com/foru...05867

LOL....
Please don't do that.
Don't do anything until you have time to think about it and come up with a good plan to really improve your car's performance.
If you don't think about it, consult people, and plan it appropriately, you could end up wasting hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

If he just wants the sound, Im sure there is something that could bee designed to play a b-series vtec sound through the speakers at a specific rpm.... Ya know, kinda like those posers with the fake blowoff valves....

And then you would have a non-warranty mini-minivan with the same power and weight at the same cost as a TypeS. What good is that?
IMO, the most desirable thing to do with an Si is swap a K20a2 head on and get some boost.

Putting the entire A2 head on an A3 is a pretty popular swap. You'll need to swap the complete head, of course, and make a reasonable provision for tuning.
One of the moderators here, B18CXr (Jack Harris) is a bit of an expert on this kind of thing.

there's nothing wrong with your car, I was listening for the vtech engagement sound too. Honda just decided to trade the sound 4 torque n the EP3, race a B16 SI and you will get over the sound absence quickly.
I love how these clowns love to bash on the Type S because they're jealous.
We need to stop being so mean to each other and experience Honda love toward one another. Where is the love the love the loveeeeeee.
The K20A3 does have large potential as it shares the block with the A2. Just get some cams, A2 head, ECU reflash, and you're good to go. Of course you could've just bought a Type S for all the cost of all these mods...
