Default ls swap in a 99' hatch

Well originally I wanted to do a good ole' b20 in my hatch however cali smog regulations are a b****. So anyways I was planning (maybe) on buying an LS motor then slapping a b16 head on there for some ls/vtec goodness but I rarely hear of people swapping LS motors into newer hatches and had some questions.

1. How much do they go for? I prolly want one out of a newer car.. 96+??
2. Is this a stupid idea?
3. where to find an ls motor and what is the code? (si=b16a, gsr=b18 ls=?)

if you decide to do it, you can buy an obd2 LS motor than will plug right in to your ek. They were produced all the way til 2001 i believe.

the code for an obd2 ls is b18b. but there were also obd1 b18b's so specify what you want when you place an order/go buy a motor from someone.

im thinking a complete obd2 ls swap should be in the neighborhood of 2300-2500 bucks....

it is, if you buy an older one (b18a1) or an obd1 version.

So then why not just get the B20 then? Both the B20 and the LS/Vtec are illegal, so whats the advantage here?

LS/Vtec is a "frankenstein" engine and will not pass smog. You can't create something that was never in production and have it be legal. Thats just all there is to it with California law. CAN it pass, well, yeah.. Some people get lucky and can squeeze them by... SHOULD it pass, no. Same with the B20. Just get a B18C if you want to do Ls/Vtec. The B18C is far more reliable and 100% legal.
