Default Armrest & Cup Holder Console not properly aligned in 96-98 Civic

I have had my 1997 Civic since it was brand new. I have noticed for several years that the armrest and cup holder console are not properly aligned as shown in the picture below:

I don't remember if my car came like this or if this happened later. When I got my alarm installed, they had to remove and reinstall the armrest and cupholder consoles, so I thought that the reinstall would solve the problem. Well, when I picked my car from the alarm shop, it was still like that. Then, I had a shop install my CTR shift boot (they did it for free because I was getting something else installed), so again, they had to remove and reinstall both consoles. Again, after I picked up the car, the problem was still there.

I'm wondering if it is possible that there could be a problem with the hardware that a simple remove and install cannot solve because it has been reinstalled twice and the problem is still there. Does anybody know what the problem may be and how to correct it? Anybody has/had this problem or knows somebody who has/had this problem?

Have you tried taking it off and seeing what prevents it from going in?

Unscrew your armest/console and push that forward, it will line up. Doesn't take but a few seconds.

I just unscrewed the 4 bolts holding the armrest, and pushed it forward and it aligns just fine. Now, I just have to put the 4 bolts back in. The bolts don't seem to want to go in unless I push the armrest back a bit to the original misaligned position. So it seems that the holes in the armrest are a little off. Do you guys think that my car came like this when it was new? How can I fix this problem?

Maybe you can pull the console back a little then?

Quick question: What color is your interior? Is it "Classy gray"?

But that would defeat the purpose. The original problem is that the armrest console sits a little too far back, thus it is misaligned w/ the cupholder console.

It is interior color K: Dark grey.

OK. After playing around w/ the bolts and trying to use force to get them to line up properly, it got a little bit better but still not where it should be. Here are some pics:

Here is the armrest console sitting there w/ no bolts in (the way it should look):

Here is the armrest console after reinstalling all of the bolts (maybe a little better than before, but still misaligned):

How can this problem can be solved? Do you think that it came like that from the factory?

Actually, somebody did notice it before I did, and that brought it to my attention.

The ones in the front and back line up only if I position farther back than it should be. If I push it forward, then none of the holes would line up perfectly.

This is why I suggested you push the console closer to the armrest/e-brake area.

Oh, you're talking about pulling the cupholder console back. I actually unbolted that console and pulled it back to the armrest console as well. It doesn't work. They don't bolt up unless I put it in it's original position.

Do you guys think the problem is in the console or in the mounting points of the car?

Yes, that's what I was talking about. Hmmm, your problem sounds weird. You bought the car new right?

I don't think the problem is that wierd now, considering that 3 other people reported the same problem on this thread. Yes, I bought the car new back in Dec. '96.

I got a 97 Civic as my daily driver and I don't have that problem at all. I even have the same color interior as you.
