Default engine replacement

I am replacing a D16Y7 in a 98 automatic civic Lx. How is the best way to separate the transmission from the engine? Since the engine and transmission need to come out as a unit, should I remove the 8 bolts connecting the drive plate to the torque convertor while the engine is still in the car or should this be done after the unit is removed. I,m not sure how I could remove these bolts from the underside of the the engine-tranny unit out of the car. How would the unit be supported to allow access? Please help!
