Default Maybe I shoulda (de)winterized - gas leak/puddle

I spent some time this weekend doing minor maintance (lubed cables, checked fluids and tires) before taking my 94 CBR 600 F2 out for the first time this spring and a quick spin. I took it to work and back (about 20 miles total) and all was fine. But then I walked into my garage a couple hours after returning and had a small puddle of gas underneath the bike.

After taking the fairing off and sniffing around (caught a great buzz) it really seemed that the gas had come from one of two tubes (#1 tube to fuel tank and #4 tube) run all the way to the bottom of the bike where the EVAP would have been according to the service manual. Any ideas on what could have caused this? Or could the gas have come from somewhere else?

The bike probably sat for 6 months with half a tank of gas in it and I ran with that tank. After reading and searching some before posting, I see some people suggest to syphon that guess out while dewinterizing and start fresh -- why is that?
