How big of an alternator can I upgrade to?
Mine stock one is fine, I had it checked by two mechanics. The charging system is working fine, everything is dandy. But when I had my subs and amp hooked up, even moderate bump would cause the rpm's on the tach to fluctuate terribly, like by up to 350rpm drops. My mechanic told me to put a bigger alternator to help the problem. He said that the tiny little alternator can't keep up with the added draw, especially since I don't have a cap, just a straight line to the amp. I allready killed one battery, so I unhooked the amp's power line and took the subs out until I figure it out. Any idea's? My old Nissan didn't have any problems, but I realize that a stock 1.6L has a much smaller charging system than my old 2.4L Altima. Car is a fully stock '99 Civic LX with the D16Y7 with 47k miles on it. Thanks guys. ---D.

Try using larger gauge wire and make sure your grounds are as short as possible. Also look into stiffining capasitors. I run a 750 watt system with a 15" sub and a 1 farad cap, my lights barely dim at idle with huge bass hits, when I'm cruseing they don't dim at all.
