You need door panels from an 88 (with minor modifications) or cut your door panels near the rear of the bulge if you dont mind the holes. It took me 6 months to find fair priced 88 panels in good condition, good luck!

The best solution that I got from someone was to drill out the plastic rivets that connect the two pieces of the panels horizontally. Then re-attached the top portion, so that airflow still works for defogging the side windows.

Planning to paint the bottom portion so that it looks more finished. I did plasticote the interior door pulls so that they're more comfortable to use to close the doors.

Other than that, you'd have to do something custom. I haven't heard of anyone being able to change to a different year's panels and not have the same problem (I've got a 90, btw). HTH!

thats exactly what I ended up doing. I also bought some flexible faux carbon fiber sheeting to cover the bottom of the exposed door

The other writers have hit the best option. Take the stock panels and remove the lower portion. Reinstall the upper after installing an flat panel made from door panel card stock-covered of course. That way it is a reasonably priced custom part and you still have the stock lower pieces. We did this on the race car and one would never really care that the bottom is covered sheetmetal.
BTW: We plugged the openings for the seatbelts with formed pieces of aluminum painted black.

OK, follow-up, then: doesn't the 88 have floor-mounted seatbelts? I'd assume that's why they'd fit. So, wouldn't you then have to convert the seatbelts also, if you want to use them? Sounds like a real PITA for a minor problem (though having the little armrests would be nice!).

Of course, the best thing to come out of doing the slicing in half thing is that you no longer have to worry about your door-mounted seatbelt making dings in the bottom half of your doorpanel.

Trust me... don't do this, it won't work like you would think it should. I ruined some mint 90 Si panels by trying this. And to have the 88 panels, you need harnesses, I forgot to mention that, sorry, I've gotten so use to them over the last year.

well im about to try it...i really want some door panles, and i have some shows soon...its either that(heating them)...

or i might peel the vinyl back from the bottom part and cut a section out some how and relay the vinyl...so then there would be " a soft spot" there...

idk im really getting tired of looking for 88 panels that are si...but they just arn't the same quality as the 91's are...

i also want it to look 98% normal...not some huge ghetto rig....

mr.saturn do u have ur panels on? pics?

I just picked up some *MINT* 88 si door panels at the junk yard for my car, wasnt even looking for them when I found them either Paid 10 bucks a piece for them.. not bad.. I got the passenger side on with ease. I removed the seatbelt deal that was on the door and cut the studs off that where holding the seat belt thingie in place, then I had to "trim" the top part of the panel in order for it to fight right.. not too hard. The only thing I really had to do was re-wire my power window/lock wires due to the new panels where rubbing on them.

if you separate the 89+ panel, you will still have to deal with the hump where the seat belts were on the upper portion, that if you put a totally flat panel on the lower portion, theres going to be a big gap. i did this but i dont care, dont have pics either. so, you might just want to find some junked 88 panel that is only torn on the bottom since its totally flat. also, to get the lower panel totally flat, youll have to bang in a corner of the speaker that protrudes out a bit. you wont be able to put a speaker there unless you match the curve on the front part of the stock panel. i didnt bother. another thing to consider is a door handle. i used an extra A pillar passenger sissy handle and mounted it to the door. worked fine, you can do whatever.

you might just want to make a whole new panel if you are really concerned with looks since you mention you do "shows", whatever that means. itll take a lot more work, but its possible, ive seen it done.

what i did to make my doors closed is take a heat gun and (carefully) heat up the door panel where the door hits and then close the door, it might make a little indention in the door panel but it worked. You can also move the striker on the door out a little and that might help but the rear edge of your door might stick out like a 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch but the door will close and then slowly move the striker in as often as you like to get the door back flush along with helping slowly to put a dent in the door panel in case you dont have a heat gun............

Hope that helps.....
