1989 Civic LX fuel sender
I ran through the tech manual to troubleshoot this part. It seems that most of the time, the fuel gauge in the dash shows I have a full tank, when in reality, it's not the case. (Interestingly, it seems to act up more when it's hot out, i.e. during the day here in Arizona, especially now that it's getting hot)
So i traced the fuel sender to be the defective part. The Honda dealer quoted me 190 bucks and 1.4 hours to replace it. Pure bullshit. I can get the seat out in ten seconds, why can't they?
Anyway, I can get the part from an online parts retailer for 45 bucks, so I'm going to replace it myself.
It says I need some kind of special wrench. (07920-SB20000) Can I get by without this, and if not, where can I get it?
Thanks

I've heard of people using assorted tools (Screwdrivers with hammer, etc) to rotate the 'lock' on the Fuel Sender Compartment. I'm sure that Honda's tool would make it easier. Maybe you can become quick friends with a Honda Tech and your local dealer
Yes, I just did mine. About 14 years of dirt but just scrape it off and use the screw driver and hammer to turn the top. It has three slots on it that you have to line up and then it lifts right out. You will see what I mean if you take the seat out.
What the hell? I replaced the sender, it worked fine. I go for a drive a few hours later, and just as I'm about to turn off the engine and go into a store, it's back up to its old tricks again. I just blew 50 dollars and I still have the same problem!
Now what?

Thought about that. I did everything by the letter in the service manual, which, if I remember properly, includes testing the gauge.

Well, same as before: it works properly when it's dark out, but not during the day. Clearly temperature has something to do with it...
So.. now what?
