Default Gotta a newbie question for all you kids with ITR experiance

OK, I have been driving my 97 ITR around for a couple of weeks now and I noticed sometime when I come to a stop it does not return to normal idea and instead idles at 1000 to 1800 about. I was just wondering if this was normal.

The car only has 5000 miles and the only mod is a cat-back mugen exhaust.

Thanks!

Do you have your lights or A/C on at that time? Idle between 800-1200 is normal depending on the conditions...

...although at startup you may idle as high as 1500-1600.

my '98 does the same thing when i come to a stop after hitting the brakes pretty hard. dealer could not replicate problem and said they had no thoughts.

Well, I don't have an ITR but this seems related.

Turn on your motor and let the car idle in park. Then press your brake pedal as *hard* as you can. Look at the tach, it goes buck-crazy... well for my car at least

Thanks, I was worried, but it is a Honda so I am sure it does the weird idle for a reason.

Yeah, I was excited when I found a type R with so few miles.

If that works (crossed fingures) you can see a picture of my R and my old GTi.

Luckily i just came home from revving my car today!

It normally idles at around 1500rpm's on mine (brand new 145kilometres on it so far).

And i also noticed today that presses the brake pedal MINORILY affects the tachometer. Only to like 1000-2000rpms at most.

*after edit*---

And is it just me or am i abit of a paranoid softy. When i was revving the car i would go to only about 4000rpm's and the car is SOOO FCKING LOUD i just could'nt go on. Maybe it's cause i was doing it in a garage, maybe it was cause the windows were down or maybe it was cause i'm a softy

I can't imagine a car being any louder it'd be ridiculous. I tried to sleep with the engine running and the bassy feeling just kept me from sleeping. Too loud, too much rumbling and mumbling and vibrations............ i love it

idle at 1500rpm is way too high once she's warmed up...

Really? Thats strange then.

Hmm..

I start up the engine, it moves around abit below 1000rpms. And then afew seconds later it creeps itself up to 1500rpm's.

Should i worry about this? This ain't at the lights or anything, it's just in my garage.

dude i wouldnt buy a 97' that only has 5000 miles on it...there is no way that car was broken in properly...i meann the original owner did not drive it enough...it might sound wierd but i think a 97' b18c5 needs more wear then 5k in 4 years.

No, no....

It is normal for the engine to idle at 1500rpm during the warm-up process. I simply stated that it is abnormal once the car HAS been warmed up

The things the effect idle...

-engine vacuum
-electrical load detector (headlights/heater fan/cooling fan/etc.)
-"power steering fluid" pressure
-speed sensor
-?

If the ecu reads any signals from any of those inputs... the idle will bump up.

If you are stopped, without touching the steering wheel or brakes, and have every electrical item off... the idle should be ~800-850 rpms.

I agree. If the car is warmed up and running correctly, idle is under 1K rpm...

But if your engines were cold, it should not go below 1000 rpm first and then to 1500 rpm. That's not normal.

1500-1800 is too high for idle. Your Idle Air Control valve may have taken a ****. If you can't adjust the rpm's with the set screw then that's definitely your problem
