b20a5 + b18c1 head + ? = vtec?
in about a week, i'll be working with a local car nut to try putting my b20a5 into his integra; nothing really exciting there. what we're hoping for, is to convert the b20a5 bottom end to accept the gsr head.
any thoughts about this? he has an ls/vtec block, just not the parts to support it yet, so please don't tell me that's the way to go... this is just to get him up and running before august/september.
thanks in advance

buddy do a search theres 100000000000's of threads on b20vtec's, and it a b20a5 i dunno what your smokin but give me some, its either a b20z2 (which i have) or a b20b2.
why b20a? because that's what i have in my garage and the car's owner doesn't have the money to spend on another engine (has 2 b18's)
btw, thanks for the "b20vtec" seach idea, i tried a couple of different things that netted little results

there isnt such a thing as a b20a, even the jdm's are either a B or a Z at the end. You might be thing about a b18a! but as far as b20's go there is a Z and a B only differences in the 2 are b20z=9.6:1 cr and a b20b=8.8:1 cr

sorry try again
the b20a came in the early preludes
as for cost efficiency,
it will be cheaper to just get a b20b or b20z, than to try to make the b20a work

why would it be cheaper? how much would it cost to convert the block to accept vtec? i've seen vtec kits on a couple of sites that are anywhere from $100-300
ooo see now you say prelude if you said what kinda car it came from thatd be a different story, im pretty sure on those b20's to you need to make the valve relifes wider, to fit a vtec head. Or you can slap a vtec head on and take your chances with the vtec intake valves smashing the b20 piston to shreads. Those kits are just the oil line kits witch you do need. Best bet is to rebuild with some aftermarket pistons and then put the head on. Its up to you.
Regardless of the car it came out of... If someone gives you an engine code, you should already know what car it came out of from the factory. Sorry but you only made yourself look stupid aemcivic.... And yes we all know about the whole trying to put a vtec head on it.... But if he did some research he will find out. Don't try to make yourself look smart becuase there are always others out there who will burn you. This is not a hypocritical post, I just hope you learned something today.

thank you, very elioquently said
You put to words what i couldn't

a few years back there was actually a running b20a/vtec prelude. some guy on ludespeed.com. it made good power but the project had too many problems so he dumped it.
It can absolutely be done, if you search on google or somewhere, there was a guy helbent on doing that conversion and was offering kits for the diy'ers. There wasn't enough interest in the swap for him to produce anymore. good luck finding it, I will see if I can dig it up.
Thanks. Yeah that is why I told him to do a search. I do not have any experiece with that set up so therefore I had no room to comment. Thanks for the info. I would like to find out more about it myself.
so... what does everyone think about the 1990 integra accepting a b20a5? any thoughts about this swap?
again, i realize there are better swaps, but none are feasible now

HOT DAYYYUM.....dan you hit the nail on the head....that guy is full of missinformation!!
personally i would not waste my time with a b20a engine!!! although in theory should work the same...i still would not waste my time....

how do you figure... if he wants to blow his motor go ahead ant my ****, ive done enough research to know a vtec head on a b20 stock bottom end isnt worth it.. when it comes down to it, it will blow. People dont understand on here you cant just pop a vtec head onto a b20 block without mods ie (valve relife's being wider) and have it run for 5 years. Dont be a cheap *** and just build the god damn thing. I dont know where you get "misinformation" from..

i'm not gonna get into the whole b20/vtec or ls/vtec argument but you make it very obvious you have no clue what your talking about. i would suggest you just shut your hole so you dont sound any dumber than you already do.

The ludespeed.com guys actually dumped the motor as it did not make the horsepower they were expecting, however they were using a stock b20a bottom end. I bet if they upped the compression it would have made more power. What I remember reading about that swap was that it was like an LS/VTEC conversion that needed a custom head gasket. If you are interested in this swap try contacting the guy at ludespeed.com and see if he will hook you up with the information needed. However I do not know how you are going to get that block to sit in an integra easily.

it take fabication to have the motor sit right cause b20a tilt back and you have to drill the head so the head bolts would line up .it's not easy bolt on like the b20b and z...good luck

Yup! I waded through a whole thread of people who didn't know the particulars or, in aemcivic's case, didn't know anything. I was beginning to despair.
My $0.02 is you can probably sidestep the fabrication to tilt the motor at an angle and just fab a diff pickup tube and oil pan combo. Not worth the effort, but some people like being different.

A 1990 Integra 'accepting' a B20A5? Forget it! Not unless you are willing to do a ton of custom fabrication. Simply put, there is NOTHING other than a 1988-1991 Prelude that this motor is going to drop right into. And since nobody uses this motor, don't count on finding a mount kit to facilitate the swap, either.
As for the whole VTEC head thing, I am not sure. I, too, have heard rumors about it being done. But from what I have heard, it is not going to be so easy to do. And I am not sure about power output.
The bottom line: the motor may be cheap. But given the grave difficulty of dropping it into your car as well as the uncertainty of how satisfied you will be in the end, forget it. Save your cash until you can swap in something more tried and true. And if custom fabrication does not bother you, at least swap in something more worthwhile like an H-series motor.
