Default Bad news about the car I bought on here... Kinda Long

Sorry mods, im not sure where to post this. I just really need to vent right now.

Well here is my story:

Back in January I purchased this car: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=707508 I had a civic that was in an accident and totaled out. I was in need of a car and stumbled on this.

Well, I live in NJ and Tim (the seller) lived in upstate NY. I called him and told him about my interest in the car and we ended up having a 2-3 hour conversation about the car, everything that was done to it, its history, and of course money and how I would get up there to see it/pick it up. Well, I decided that this seemed like the car for me based on what Tim and I talked about. The day after we spoke, I took a 5 hour bus ride up to Binghamton with a certified check in my hand so that I could pick the car up.

When I saw the car initially it was freezing out and snowing and the car was covered in snow and dirt (from the 1 hour trip Tim had to make to meet me at the bus depot) Pretty much everything Tim and I talked about on the phone was correct, from what I could see.

Here is what he didn't tell me about the car until I got up there though:

He never mentioned once to me that the passenger airbag was removed and that the main airbag wire harness was also removed. He told me when I got there that he took the passenger airbag out because his wife was pregnant at the time and didn't want it deploying. Sounds legit right? Keep reading.

Tim never once mentioned that the passenger door requires a different key entirely then the rest of the car until I got to Binghamton. He gave me some lame reason which I now don't recall. I was tired and cold and just wanted a car to get me home. I overlooked this as well.

These were the 2 big things he just so happened to leave out while talking to me on the phone. He must have just forgotten, it was an honest mistake. I looked past these things and bought the car. So now I have the car 4 months now and so far it's been pretty fun and reliable. Well last night my friend offered to run a carfax for me since he paid for the 30 day subscription. Here is where everything goes down hill. Before I go any further, I know it's my own negligence for not running a carfax before I bought the car. I only talked to Tim 1 day before actually going up to get the car and I guess he sort of gave me a false sense of trust because he sounded so honest over the phone so I never got a chance to carfax it. Well the first thing that came up on the carfax was:

ALERT! Severe problems (major accidents, fire, flood damage, major odometer problems or lemon history) were reported by a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for this 1996 HONDA CIVIC CX (2HGEJ6324TH120839). This vehicle does NOT qualify for the CARFAX Buyback Guarantee.

Well apparently the car was in an accident back in 1998 where it hit another car and collided with a bridge guard rail. The car was issued a salvage title and later a rebuild title. Being the honest, Trust worthy guy Tim is, he NEVER let me know that this car was a salvage/rebuild. After calming down from this last night I started to think back at all of the reasons Tim gave for why the car was the way it was. Here goes:

Tim told me he bought the car from someone in Virginia (I think he said Virginia). He bought it with all of the SI conversion components already in it: the front end, interior, brakes, suspension.

He explained to me that the car originally had an h22 in it before motor mount kits were out on the market, so the passenger side tranny mount was cut and welded to accommodate the h22. Tim later explained that he rewelded the mount back to the proper location so he could use the HCP mounts.

After all this Tim, I finally have a decent idea of what's going on with this hunk of **** that now resides in my driveway.

The passenger tranny mount is off by about 1/4 of an inch which is obviously noticeable. Putting 2 and 2 together I believe Tim lied to me about the tranny mount being moved, but rather forced 1/4 of an inch due to the front end collision.

I believe Tim lied to me about taking the passenger airbag out for his wife's safety. He took it out because all that was left was a popped module that went off during the accident.

I now know why the passenger door was replaced. Because the car was also hit from the side, not because of the lame *** excuse that Tim gave me.

I also now have a good idea why there are dents on both fenders in the EXACT same place. I think it is because the frame is bent and caused the fenders to dimple.

Something I didn't see when I picked up the car which I only noticed weeks later was that the window etching on both the driver and passenger windows were scratched out. Now I think I know why...

These are all of the major problems... Forget all of the little bullshit stuff that I had to deal with that isn’t even worth mentioning

Sorry this is so long, I'm just really upset at myself and the situation right now. I put full responsibility on myself for not running a carfax ahead of time but damn this just blows. I worked my *** of to pay for this car while Tim just basically took me for a walk around the park. I guess the old saying on how you can't trust anyone holds true in this case.

Thanks for letting me vent HT

honestly, i cant blame Tim 100% because i dont know the 100% truth. but from what i have gathered and learned about the car... what i posted was the most logical reasoning i have.

So now its my obligation to take this hunk of steel and transform it into something i can be proud of

damn, i am sorry to here that . i am getting ready to buy a car on here so i hope everything goes ok, and its also a good thing you posted because it reminds some of us about the things that can easily be overlooked in a modified car or even a completely stock car for that matter.

never trust the seller's word and caveat emptor "buyer's beware". Since most of the description of the car was in verbal form, you can't blame the seller for doing sales talk on you.

yea like i said. given the circumstances, i blame myself. But it still hurts to be taken advantage of. Its sort of ironic how out of the dozens of cars i looked at this was the only car that i didnt run a carfax. oh well. hopefully this will remind people what not to do when buying a used/modified car

This really sucks because pete is a really good friend of mine and i've joked plenty of times about pete's car being shady/wrecked and it really sucks that it was true. What probably really burns pete up is that even though we tried to tell him that this guy could be shady, he stuck up for him and said that he was different. Being the straight arrow kid that "greek lightning" is, he definately did not deserve this. He worked hard to earn the money to get this car and passed up some other really good deals only because this car was damn close to what he originally wanted to do.

SHADY PEOPLE ARE EVERYWHERE unfortunately

Hey, let me stand up for myself here.
First off, I did not NOT NOT Know the car was in an accident. I am a stand-up guy!! I NEVER HIT SO MUCH AS A RABBIT with that car, let alone any Fuggin bridge whatever. I bought the car 1 year before he bought it from me- From a guy named RUBIN in Virginia. It came with a clear title, and I handed you a clear title. that's all I knew, that's all I posted.

I even have a pic of him cuz I didnt trust him- In case the car was stolen or something- I HAVE PICS OF US (ME AND KENLUDE97 towing the car back from VA with his dad's truck. I can post those if need be.
Dude, I told you about the airbags- My wife gave birth to our second baby girl on Dec 1 of this year-- My wife WAS pregnant, the airbag WAS removed.. I made mention of this, as it is a major concern of everyone's- personal safety.

Since I did not trust the guy I bought the car from, (the key I received with the car had very small grooves, and would only open the 2 doors and the ignition, I got no hatch key) and SIDan could START my civic with his key, I got a new (used) ignition from a junkyard, and got the driver's side and hatch locks re-keyed at the local locksmith- Kenlude97 and SIDan would gladly attest to this, if you so desire.
I did not do the passenger side, simply due to laziness on my part. I didn't want to rip apart the doorpanel and dig it out. I did the ones I used, and since it already had power locks, I never even carried that Passenger door key with me - anywhere.
The dents were in the fenders, and teh hood, before I even bought it. I have pic proof of that too. I tried to document everything i did with that car, not for THIS reason, NEVER thought I'd be defending myself like this, but for fun, as that's what cars are to me..
I told you EVERYTHING I KNEW about the car.
EVERYTHING. the guy I got it from did the si conversion, and the brakes. I did not crack into the brakes.
I sincerely apologize for you getting the wrong pads, but that's what he told me, that's ALL I KNEW!
This character flaming has gone on too far. I am a stand-up guy, who just sold a car to a guy who I thought would treat it as well as i did.
SORRY you are missing screws, etc. I have ordered screws/clips/HW for that car since I got it, almost every week was a new box of 'em. I didn't think that was a big deal- I just forgot to mention, since it was now sufficiently bolted down, etc..

I am NOT a shady guy, I am NOT a bad seller, I am NOT a scammer. dude, we talked for hours about htis thing, I told you EVERY detail.
I HAVE PICTURES of the frame, before the H22 even went in, where I had to weld the mount in place! I do not lie. the holes were moved, they were cut out and re-welded. I had to weld my mount into place, BEFORE I COULD EVEN PUT THE MOTOR IN PLACE. WHICH MEANS, IT WAS DONE BEFORE I HAD THE CAR, WHICH MEANS, I DID NOT WRECK THIS CAR, WHICH MEANS I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING, WHICH MEANS I apologize for the issues, but it's not ME you should be mad at. I was just as in the dark as you were. Apparently I was scammed too, only I didn't do my homework to know better..
Dude, you're a reasonable guy. I'm a reasonable guy. I swear to you I knew nothing of this. I would NEVER take advantage of another person like that. It's just not the way I am. I am truly sorry for what happened, Pete.

OK. This thread is getting WAY out of hand. krnbk2 we are very sorry that you feel this way. Why would you post here first and not contact him and discuss this first with him!!!???

[QUOTE=EK22Tim]The passenger tranny mount is off by about 1/4 of an inch which is obviously noticeable. Putting 2 and 2 together I believe Tim lied to me about the tranny mount being moved, but rather forced 1/4 of an inch due to the front end collision.QUOTE]

These are the pics of the car when we were in VA Beach picking the car up.

Here is a pic of the mount that was used to F-rig the motor in place.

If you look here you can see that we cut/ground off that old mount. Notice the bolt holes that were removed and rewelded in the side of the frame. That was there when he bought it. Nothing that we did!

before we did much to the engine bay

Here is the CUSTOM bracket that we made to mount the tranny!!!

Well im glad you decided to respond. Let me just say that if you stand back for a second and see it from my point of view... EVERYTHING I said makes sense:

Like I posted, I didnt say you got into the accident, I said the car was in an accident. Im not pointing the finger at you.

WHY would you take out the airbag in fear of your wifes saftey when it is MUCH EASIER to pull the airbag fuse... THINGS LIKE THIS DONT MAKE SENSE. On top of that, you didnt tell me about the airbags untill AFTER i already drove 5 hours away! If it was such a big concern for you, you would have informed me BEFORE i drove up.

Same thing goes for the Key. Tim, Im not saying you lied to me about it. But some things just added up a little too well. Like the airbag scenario, I dont care if what you speak is the truth. you happened to tell me about the 2 keys AFTER i arrived in binghamton.

and you know what, I still gave you the same amount of money we agreed on even AFTER finding out about these 2 things.

When you step outside of your window and look at it through my window you can see why I posted what I did.

I blame all of this on myself for 1.) not getting a carfax and for 2.) not seeing the car in person before bringing money.

I wasnt trying to hurt your reputation. Im glad you posted pics of the car kenlude, it clears some things up. Like i said this was a Venting post, not a post to hurt anyones reputation.

Guess this just goes to show how important it is to run car faxes on modded vehicles especially. Its just a risk you take I guess and I have been through it too, but it happens and you learn to just fix it.

yup.

Also just to say something about the Mount. I am glad i was wrong about the mount being off because of the accident because then i have less to worry about as far as the frame being damaged. But once again, From my side of the fence everything I posted was very plausible.

Yes it is very important to run carfaxes! Ans yes all the points that were made by krnbk2 are valid. But this should of been talked over with Tim before this was posted. If you were just "venting" which is cool, there are time that we all need to. It would of been better that you leave names out. IF you were NOT trying to go after a certain person.
If you pull the air bag fuse would it disable both air bags? leaving the driver without one?
It would be good of you to post over at the For sale post that you were not pointing a finger at Tim. That would make him feel better about this unfortunate situation.
Thanks

Being that you guys think it is so important to run carfaxes, Tim never ran one? I mean, he said he thought the guy was shady, so why not run it to make sure he is the owner???? More so, if there was nothing to hide, why is it the key issue and the airbag issue were not delegated before Pete arrived in Binghampton?

He would have gotten less money. No matter what he was desperate to pass this potential piece of **** off as fast as possible. Pete's kindness and need for a car were taken advantage of in the situation. No matter what explanations are given, there is still a high degree of shadyness involved.

Im done with this post. Tim already contacted me in private. I'd delete the thread but I dont want it to look like im being shady. if the Mods want to lock this, thats fine with me.

I needed to vent, I got my venting in. Even if tim came out and said straight up that he screwed me (which he didnt do).... Oh well. I cant do anything about it now regardless so who cares right?

This is a wakeup call to all those who are intrested in buying a modifed car. Make sure you do your homework BEFORE you buy it. ill be at work so no more bashing of Tim

Pete,
Well, yes, I can understand all too well- I'm in a similar situation with my new 5.0.
I honestly didn't think the key thing would be a big deal either- just slipped my mind. I'm just glad i remembered to give you the key. Dude, I pulled the other locks out, and the local locksmith keyed it to the new key for $9. Just pull it out and have it re-tumbled to your ignition key like i did the others. I should have just done the other one, and now wish I had.
I am sorry this happened. I did not do it to you directly, and CERTAINLY didn't do it on purpose. I'm glad this all could all be cleared up.

I did not rip him off, I did not intend to rip him off, and I did not 'pass this piece of **** off as fast as possible' - It had been for sale for like 2 months before he called. I was driving it 50+ miles a day, without a hitch (Except the axle binding, which he knew about THOROUGHLY) -
He wanted/needed to do the deal quickly, I worked around his schedule to do just that, including driving 1.4 hours out of my way, which was fine. I'd do it again in a minute..
The car was not a POS- It's a great car. It runs awesome, drives nice, and looks great, IMO..

Pete, I hope we're good. I am sorry about this unfortunate situation, and can see where you would put these together after the carfax. But I assure you, they are coincedences. I have explained myself with the truth.
Good luck with the car, and i hope sincerely you like the car, other than this. Please keep me updated as to how it's running, etc, mods you do, etc. I would like to see new pics of it too.

And I agree with everyone here- CARFAX CARFAX CARFAX. NO MATTER WHAT. I should have done it. I thought he was shady, and the farthest I took that was to take his pic when we got the car, and change the ignition.

Glad we got this resolved, anyways. Thanks to all who helped, and thanks Pete for listening to my side.
