i put everything back together properly and then proceeded to bleed the **** out of the brakes. Then i took it on the road and this "bump" noise was coming from my left side. It was a bump that got faster as i went faster, and slower when i slowed down.

anyone think they know what this could be??

Did you clean all of the rust off of the hub?
Maby that rotor is wobbling because there is some stuff stuck behind it.

 

i guess thats a possibility, but more than likely not. I can hear the bump only under deceleration or in between gears. When I accelerate I can't feel the bump.

it may sound stupid but did u tighten your lugs down all the way, i know someone who had the same problem due to loose lugs

 

yea the lugs are tight, i use air tools. anything else

keep the suggestions coming, i'll check anything that even MIGHT be wrong

 

anybody else have suggestions

mabey your shims fell out and now the pad it loose.

Maybe something broke loose when you used air tools to tighten your lug nuts.

Or something is wrong with the rotor. My guess is that there is an imperfection on the rotor somewhere and everytime it makes contact with the brake pads, it's making that 'bump' noise.

 

u know ur not supposed to use impact gun to tighten your lug nuts. thats what i was told and taught in my auto tech class... but sadly i still use impact gun to tighten my lug nuts.. hehe

well, it could be your ball joints. possiblity your wheel bearings. did you say you replaced the rotors, did you clean off the rotors with brake parts cleaner? use new pads?

 

these are brand new rotors, just put on earlier today

 

no i didn't use new pads, mine were practially brand new.

i cleaned off the rotors good with brake cleaner

wheel bearings huh?.....those a bitch to change???

oh yea, it wasn't doing any of these things before i put new rotors on. The brake pedal pushes far down now, and it takes a pump or two before they build up pressure. I bled the brakes after getting everything back together too.

maybe my rear brakes???

 

Could be a warped brake rotor, check it with a dial indicator or feeler gauges. I'd start there myself. Also, if you're going to put 1500+ worth of shiny new wheels onto 1000+ brake rotors, whats 50 bucks for a torque wrench? Pretty cheap insurance if you ask me. My 0.02. Jim.

too bad I don't waste money on those 1500 dollar wheels. I've got GSR swirlies on my civic. And they weren't 1000 dollar rotors either, just replacing stock rotors. So next time you want to put your 2 cents in, better make sure you have the slightest clue what your talking about

 

i would also recommend putting your wheels on with only a torque wrench. If not, then hand tighten, so you can get a better estamite of force. You can warp rotors, and break other things in a hurry. Did you loosen the axle nut by chance? I'd check that, otherwise jack the car up, and check to see if the wheel can move in any direction. I've never had my brakes go away for a wheel bearing though. If you don't find anything with the wheel, take of the wheel and recheck your bolts, on the caliper and what not, make sure you got them all. Second, did the pads come out of the calipers at all, make srue you have them in the right way, its easy to do, and can cause some peculiar situations.

NEVER REUSE PADS!

That's seriously bad!

No matter how little miles you put on, never put on new rotors with old pads! Same goes for new pads, you can't put new pads on without resurfacing the rotor or putting new ones on.

 

ok well i'm going to go out today after work and pick up new pads. Thanks for the heads up

 

yeah never reuse pads. and now if you go out and get new pads, your gonna be best off getting your rotors resurfaced, so its all smooth again so then the rotors and pads now can work together and make sure their surfaces are even to eachother.

 

even if i only put a mile or so on those rotors??

 

If the rotors are still nice a smooth, they should be okay, but if you can see any scrapes from the pads, I'd resurface them. Those could end up cutting the new pads and reducing pad life.
