I have a 1999 Honda Accord coupe EX V6. I got the car 2 years ago, and I put about 26k miles on it, which makes it a total of 62,000. I've been taking good care of it and it has been paying off. Recently I noticed that whenever I start the car and drive off, it has difficulty switching gears. First, I thought that I don't warm up the engine enough. But then I noticed that whenever I press the gas pedal after slowing down or coming to a full stop, the RPM's would jump up to about 3-4k and the car would just stand there, as if I'm in neutral. At that point, I either needed to gently apply gas in order to get it to run, or switch to D1, and then D2, and so forth, as if I'm driving a stick. Approximately after 300miles of noticing these issues, Check Engine light came on and the code was P0740 which means Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction. Having cleared the error, it didnt help much. Last time I drove my car, I saw light smoke coming from under the hood, so I parked it near my house and haven't touched it in few days. Next time I started my car and attempted to drive off, it wouldn't switch gears, and I couldn't drive it at all. I checked my transmission fluid, and it seemed as if the level was very low. Is my transmission completely hosed, or what is the next thing I should do to get this problem resolved? Please assist.

po740 is a code that means you t/c clutch is not working properly or there is a problem with pressure loss from the converter seal.Unfortunatly most of the time it means a new trans.You should contact honda and see if they will help you because there are many problems with that trans.

My ATF level is low. I was trying to add some Honda Z1 ATF and I couldn't find where to fill it. According to the manual, it says remove the fill cap and pour in there, but it doesn't show what it is, or where it is. The hole where the dipstick goes is way too small, even if i were to use a funnel. Any suggestions?

tranny fluid goes right back in through the dipstick hole, just funnel it in through their, using a small funnel

 

there is a 17mm fill plug on top of trans

 

Do you by any chance have a picture of that, or what is the best way to get to it?

I don't have a pic of it but you can't really miss it. It's on the driver side closer to the firewall. It's just a big nut sitting on a falt surface, look where the drain plug is and follow it up. It's a ctually quite a pain to take it off so make sure you loosen before filling you will also need a long funnel.

Some of them even say "ATF" on them.

 

After refilling ATF, my car behaved normal. I went to a mechanic to check out where the leak is, and he suspected that it came from the seal on the driver's side. He said we could try replacing the seal, and if the problem continues, it's definitely the transmission that is faulty...Any ideas?

Seeing a leaking axle seal on those is bad news usually. If a new one starts leaking soon, the differential bearings probably have alot of play in them. That usually goes with the code you have too.
