F@&kin crank bolt!!!???
I've got my stock D16 on the ground, clutch is off and I need to take the crank pulley off to replace my water pump/timing belt. Problem is, I put my impact on the crank bolt and it wouldn't budge!!! I've never encountered a crank bolt this stubborn in my life (I used to wrench GM's for a living)!!!!!! This is no GM either, with lots of big holes in the flywheel to shove something into so that it doesn't turn when I use a persuasion bar on the crank bolt. Anyone else ever have this problem, or am I just an idiot and this honda is kicking my A$$!!
thanks in advance,
Neil

Hell no damn hole trough the flywheel !!!
you can put a pri bar against the dowel pin and the toot of the flywheel, and pry the **** out of the pulley bolt with a 4 foot extension on the breacker bar....
Yup Yup Yup, it work, it's gettho but it's actually work's

thats what worked for the one i did with the engine out of the car. put my foot on the valve cover to keep the whole engine from rolling around and pulled with a big braker bar and 4' pipe. came right off. doing it while in the car tool a little more creativeness....

Neil</TD></TR></TABLE>I am in the middle of this problem in my girlfriends 93 civic. Yesterday I tried to do a timing belt and water pump. At first I had her try to crack the bolt with 3 foot breaker bar and 4 foot cheater bar as I was under the car holding the flywheel secure. Come to find out she was not strong enough. Insert my friend, so he starts out by breaking my 17mm 6pt craftsman socket. So I say okay no problem I have a 12pt. 17mm(craftsman) the 6pt maust of been weak. Nope broke that 17mm also. At least you can just swap them at sears. Now I have 17mm impact socket to try out. just waiting for a friend to come over so I can finish my(3 hour
) job.

Yeah they are a real B***** to change. I have to change mind this week. I was reading the specs on the torque tightest when putting it back on it says 145 ft lbs so they are going to be tight. Also try to use the shortest extension possible so you don't lose any torque or try not to use any extension if possible. Even though a impact gun is strong as sh** they usually won't break the bolt lose. Breaker bar is your friend

unless you get a 1 inch drive, 400 ft/lb impact gun, you know, they look like those guns that rambo used

I used an impact gun to get mine off. Wasnt one of those high torque 1" drives or anything, just a 1/2" one from my brother's house. It took some time, but after i let it beat on the bolt for a minute or two and then let the compressor refill itself, it eventually came off. I had to max out the compressor at 150psi though and it still took a while.
Get a propane torch.
heat it up till its glowing red.
Id put my 2135 IR gun on it like the one showed. You use whatever tools you have left.
get the right tool to hold the flywheel.
and let it rip.
then drink a beer.

here's what I do, and it works everytime no impact tools needed
If the engine is out of the car its even easier.
with the clutch cover off.....find a bracket( I used the intake man bracket) and bolt it too the block close to the flywheel and then on the other side of the bracket bolt it to the flywheel....now the bolt will stay stationary while you use the biggest breaker bar you have.....works for me everytime even if the engine is in the car, just take off the black cover thats on the bottome of the transmission and do the same..
good luck hope that helps

yea, it realy shouldnt be hard when its out of the car. the d15 i pulled appart had 170k on it and that bold came out with a braker bar+ 4' pipe. i put 2 flywheel bolts in and one trans bolt. then put a jack handle between them and that held the crank from turning. then put one foot ont he vlave cover and pulled the 4' pipe toward me till the bolt loosened.

this is what worked for me. I took a section of nylon rope, from a boat anchor. And stay with me here... thread it into the cylinder as much as you can, crank that thing over and compress the rope. It wont damage the cylinder or piston. just be sure to re-torque the head bolt afterwards. This is only good in a time of dire need.

From: hittin corners so hard you can taste my rims..
once i had to use a 3/4"er from work.. that socket barley fit in that big *** hole. 1/2 drive wasn't cutting it, and that was at 140PSI with mad volume.
here's what i do. i take an old peice of a crank pulley belt(i have one cut to length here). and put it around the crank pulley. i then put on my chain wrench. then i *try* my air gun first. but that hardly works to get it off!! so i use a long breaker bar with a 2-3 feet of pipe over it.
easiest with motor out of car. take tranny off and leave flywheel on. stick a screwdriver through flywheel and wedge it to hold motor still. put breaker bar on bolt. stand on breaker bar with a good weight. should break free. youcan also stand motor against wall and pull up on breaker. i find it easier to put my hands on valve cover to steady motor then put my weight on breaker
Ok, now I need help lol I just got done doing putting my water pump and timing belt on and now I need to find out a way to tighten the crank pulley bolt. And I don't have that special tool so what else can I do to make it work. The motor is still in the car by the way.
Thanks for all the tips. Maybe if I put them all together, I won't even break a sweat!!!!!! As for the nylon rope trick, I've done that on V8's before, nice tip. I only get weekends to work on it because of my job, I soaked the hell out of it last weekend with Knock-er-loose, I'm hoping it's soaked in so tomorrow I can put some heat on it, and light er up with the impact. Get this, air compressor crapped out on me, won't even turn the impact.....so, guess I'll have to use the Kenworth. The semi puts out about 120 psi. I love trucks. Again, thanks for all the tips. As far as tightening the crank pulley, would it work to just try putting it in gear? I know I made that work with a V8 once. Just a thought. I don't know much about four-poppers, but I'm trying to learn.
