No in most cases you can use the stock exhaust. However, bigger gains can be seen with bigger exhaust. If you have the money just get a bigger exhaust. i am personally going to go with 3in piping
just run open down pipe
or
If you already have an exhaust (at least 2.5") i would run that on the street with an electronic cutout for the strip.
or
If you have the funds just go with a 3" SS and a carsound or testpipe.

depends where you get it. i think http://www.kteller.com has 3in under 300 for just the piping (catback I think). With a name brand mmuffler you are looking at 500up. best thing is to try and get it local. I know here in ND...I was quoted 150 from the turbo back 3" mandrel bent. ia m sure it wasnt stainless stell but who needs bling bling under the car
if its not stainless steel it will need to be ceramic coated to prevent rust. so it ends up being the same price as stainless.
i was in a turbo si with stock exuast and it sputtered and almost felt like it was misfireing because of the largely restrictive exhaust.
