Default Gear setting on a SOHC Vtec and compression?

I have a D16Z6 with a Y8 head on it. First I was just curious on what compression about I should be running? I did some compression calulator on the internet and it said Im around 9 to 1 compression? Does that sound right? I thought I would be a little higher with the Y8 head on there. And also, I have an adjustable cam gear on there and was just wondering on where to get started with tunnin it. Now I know that every motor is different and the best way to tune it is on a dyno but I just wanted to know roughly where Im going to get the most power, cam gear retarded or advanced. Doesnt retarded give top end and advanced ginve lower end?

Thanks for all the help.

Matt
