You forgot the JUN cams! (checked their website but nothing is listed there in terms of cam specs for Honda....everything but actually)

I know what duration and lift is, but how is it related to their performance or the type of powerband they produce ?

I figure more lift and duration gives better topend performance at a higher RPM compared to a cam with less lift and duration.

 

So wait, for what lobes are these specs for?

It is nice and cool to have all the cams spec, but can someone here explain to me what can I get out of from the cams spec and how can I use the specs to decide which cams is best for certain application or purpose?

Here's my knowledge limited and rudementary explaination of lift and duration. (please correct me if I am wrong), but I'll give it a shot. Let's take the ITR cam and the Toda Spec C's cams for an example.

Lift: How high the valves move up and down.

Duration: how long the valves stay open.

ITR

INTAKE lift - 11.5 mm, duration - 240 @ 1mm
EXHAUST lift - 10.5 mm, duration - 235 @ 1mm

If you think about it like this as your RPM goes up so does the RPMs of the cams. The higher the RPMs go the less time fuel and air is allowed into the combustion chamber. Now the higher lift and longer duration provides more time to allow fuel and air in at a high RPM compared to a cam with less duration and lift. Which is why a certain cams perform much better at a higher RPM than others.

How does this apply to our example. The ITR cam HP peaks around 8200 and doesn't produce any more power after 8200 rpms, where as Todas would continue to make power because of it higher duration and lift at RPM higher compared to the ITR cams.

Another, variable that I don't know much about would be the overlap, which is when both intake and exhaust valve is open. At this point, the cam designers try to use a scavenging effect to try to draw the exhaust out and cause a vacuum to suck in Air and Fuel.

Sorry, its a little incomplete but that my limited knowledge of cams.

But I guess what I tried to get at is which one is more important? More lift or more duration. So what is the benefit for having a high lift, but little bit less duration, and what is the advantage for having high duration but less lift?

I ask because from the specs, this is the main different between JUN and TODA cams.

 

You don't want one and not the other. You want a perfect combination of both.
