I just bought a 98ek hatch and as I was cleaning up the car I remembered a lot of members on here sayingthat, that black plastic inner peice that goes around the rear fender contributes to rust, so I go to the rear and take off the rubber/plastic piece and as I look in the top corner I see a little rust has formed, it doesn't look all that bad at all, and it's on the inner side, not the outer side. The paint is chipping a little. BTW it's on both sides I want to fix this up before it spreads.

At first I was thinking of cutting it but thats a pretty stupid idea, the metal seems to be very thick in that corner, what do you guys suggest? the rust is in the corner so if I were to sand it no one would be able to see it, and Im also thinking I can grind or sand a good amount of metal off. So what do you suggest I do?

Body Shop

Don't even begin to mess with that..all your going to do is **** something up.

Depending on how bad it is the body shop may just sand blast it and put rust primer on it.

If rust is there then theres a good chance that its going to start spreading other places..this happened to my 92 EH3 and the body shop cut the 1/4 panels out and re welded new ones and painted for $1400.00

do you feel like diy or do you want to pay a shop to do it right? its all what you want to do....its not our car.

 

well how big is the rust? Like the size of a finger tip?

If you want, buy rust-proof solution and use that to rub off the rust, and sand it, prime and touch up on that spot.
