Default 91 Accord with 247k miles....long road trip worthy?

Hey ya'll...in July I will be going to Myrtle Beach which is about 600 miles from me. My accord has 247,5xx on it as of right now...by then it will probably be closer to 249k. It runs perfect and I haven't had a problem with it since I bought it with 242k from the original owner. All electrical items work perfectly. I cranked up the a/c today and to my surprise it fired out crisp, cold air.

So here's my question...do you think it will make it the 600 miles to SC and back without any problems? How many of you guys have had any experience making long road trips on your high mileage accord?

I have a second car, a 2000 Type R but I don't want to take it to the beach, for obvious reasons; theft...I'm pretty confident the Accord will do just fine but just wanted some opinions and experiences. Thanks guys!!!

Well, obviously it depends on how well maintained your accord is. I would give it a good check up/tune up before hand. Sounds like its not giving you any problems though.

I live an hour from Myrtle Beach, so if you get into a bind I can help you out.

Lol, if I make it to your house, I can coast the rest of the way, lol.

The thing runs perfect. It runs as smooth as my ITR. I'm 95% confident the thing will make it with no problems...it's quite a trooper. I've seen these things go over 400k with no problems...

Yes, a tune up is definitely a must....probably new spark plugs and wires, you know, the basic stuff.

The thing was maintained perfectly by the original owner....oil every 3k, timing belt and waterpump every 90...everything replaced when it should have been. He took great care of it.

Will do man...that's one of the things that actually worried me...if I got down there and there was a problem with it....some shop would see that I was from PA and they would price gouge the **** outta me because they'd know I couldn't get home without them.

Yea if it's mechanically in good shape, you'll be just fine. It is an Accord after all, they do indeed run forever. Back in December 1999 when mine had about 220k miles I drove it from Chicago, IL to Denver/Colorado Springs, CO, all around Colorado while I was there, to the top of Pikes Peak (14,100 ft. high, and boy is it cold and windy up there on Dec. 28, LOL). Drove out there and back, total 3000 miles in 6 days, not a single problem. In November 2002 I moved from central Illinois to south Florida, and I moved everything without any shipping or moving truck. With 305k miles (and still on original clutch to boot) I loaded up my car with about 350 lbs in the back (trunk & backseat), 2 adults, then towing a trailer with about 1000 lbs of stuff on it, and the trailer itself was about 200 lbs so about 1200 roughly. Drove 12 hours straight for 2 days, 1300 miles total, not a single friggin problem!! Hell just since my car turned 200k it's been in MN, WI, IL, IA, NE, CO, IN, OH, KY, TN, AL, and FL. I'm up to 340k now and I'd still trust it to get in right now and drive across the country. Last month alone I drove up to Orlando twice (500 miles a pop roundtrip) and Daytona Beach once (600 miles total), put on about 3000 miles last month, and once again, not a single problem!

Here's from when I moved down here.... this pic taken in Clanton, Alabama

So yea, if your car runs anything like mine, which it sounds like it does, you'll be just fine. Don't worry about your car, enjoy your trip!!

Oh man, your accord is the same exact color as mine, sweet!

Yes, I remember you replying in the "mileage" thread on here with over 300k on yours...that is inspiring.

I keep telling my friends/parents that the body will go on the thing before the engine...and after that happens, I'd like to find a shell and put my current engine into that one.

When I do take it, I'm going to throw synthetic oil into it....it's been on Valvoline Dino oil it's whole life and i figured the trip would be a good time to switch over and stay with synthetic.

Sweet picture BTW, I always get nonbelievers when I tell people how many miles are on mine. I love it!

Yes, all the maintenance was done on time by the previous owner...that means timing belt and water pump changed at 90k and then 180k...he even replaced the entire ECU when it crapped out for some reason...

I just had my b-pipe replaced yesterday for 65 bucks...it had a small hole in it...it would only have gotten worse, so I got it outta there.

The engine does drink a drop of oil....not a drop.

Found oil in the intake while I was cleaning the filter the other day...I don't think it's anything big...it seems to be from the valve cover breather....I'm still planning on taking it...248,5xx and still running strong....I'll cross over 250k on the way home, woohoo! Leaving in two weeks.

Your accord has 24k miles? LOL, I think that's a typo.

I'm putting synthetic in it to keep temperatures down a bit....and it's funny you say that about the battery because I'm getting that replaced before I leave also...just to be safe.

And I will definitely check the coolant hoses....the radiator was replaced last fall with a brand new one, so I'm not terribly worried about that...but the hoses will be checked, thanks!
