Modifying a stock ECU – Companies that do it, what to ask and look for?
I realize that getting my ECU reprogrammed for the modifications I have (or will make before installing the ECU) could be pretty helpful. I need to use my stock ECU – definitely cannot use a different box per SCCA improved touring rules. The car is an ’87 Honda Prelude si; not sure if that matters. Basically I am looking for recommendations on companies that do this and what I should be asking.
From my little ECU modifying knowledge, the best way is to have a company dyno the car and make the ECU changes. But I assume this gets very expensive quickly. If you know of any places in the CT or RI area that does this, I would be curious to contact them and find out how much it would cost.
The approach I’ll probably take is to send out the ECU and tell them what modifications I’ve done to the car and have them program it based on that. I imagine this would be much cheaper. The other way would be great if not too expensive though. Modifications: IT engine (bored to rules limit, raise compression slightly and the other usual stuff legal within SCCA’s rules), custom 2 ½” exhaust with race muffler, aftermarket header, air intake system.
I realize that the changes to the ECU might make it necessary to get different fuel injectors with higher flow rates; maybe from RC engineering? Currently I am using my OEM injectors. I would prefer not to get a different fuel pump in addition to fuel injectors. I really, really do not want to be forced into using race fuel.
What companies do you recommend? What do you recommend getting modified: air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, rev limiter? The ’88 Accord LXi’s engine has .5 higher compression ratio but has about 10 more HP (otherwise seems just about identical) – do you know what Honda did to take advantage of the higher compression? Any idea what a reasonable price would be? I’d appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks for the help!!

I think Kenji is just doing ODB1 chipping though.
Finding someone chipping/programming ODB0 computers will be harder. I know Zdyne - http://www.zdyne.com/index.html - is still doing it, but they mainly work with B16 and ZC stuff.

Probably wouldn't need to adjust the rev limiter unless you're running different cams or something that would call for it. A good ecu tune would have a nice smooth fuel curve , adding fuel exactly where you need it (dyno tune) and some advanced timing up top where you can pull it without detonation.

Adrian at http://www.hyperducktuning.com/ does non-OBD chipping, but he doesnt list anything pre 88. Maybe if you email him, he can help you. You can also PM him on honda-tech, his name is eg6ajk.
