key stuck in ignition - manual
Hey guys,
I searched on this but seems like everyone else that had a problem had an automatic. Anyways, I've got a '93 Accord EX 5speed and the key is currently stuck in the ignition.
I drove to work this morning, no problems, went to lunch and when I came back I couldn't get my key out of the ignition. I can turn the car off, but I can't push the key in and give it the final half turn or so to pull it out. It just won't budge and I'm afraid to put too much pressure on it.
Has anyone run into this problem before on a car with a manual transmission? Solution?
Thanks.
Zach

You've tried moving the steering wheel, right? When my steering wheel is all of the way to one side, I can't take the key out, but when I move the steering wheel a little it will come out. Else, you may need to take out the lock mechanism and either put a new one in (you'd have two keys then, one for the door and one for the ignition), or try to rekey an ignition key. I'm assuming that your current lock mechanism is worn out.
Tell you what, just tell me where your car is exactly, and I can try to take a look at it. How much gas is in it, and you don't know what your mileage is exactly, right?

Yeah, I've moved the wheel every which way, jiggled the key, prayed, swore, and done just about everything I can think of and the damn thing won't come out. Hell I've even driven the car around since it happened just to see if that would change anything, but no such luck.
I think that tomorrow I'm going to start taking apart the swtich and see there is anything obvious or easily fixed. Any idea how much a new lock mechanism would run me?
Oh yeah and my car is parked outside your mom's bedroom with a sign that says screw you

Try some penetrating oil. Let it drip along the key into the tumblers and soak overnight. My key gets sticky sometimes and this always works. Not WD40!
Powdered graphite works the best on ignition switches. Your gonna hafta replace the switch anyway, so bust it outta there and install a new one. jfastman
