Turbo is glowing red
have ihs air/fuel ratio checked. he may be running lean. that spikes the exhaust gas temperatures. just checking the exhaust temp is useless. different engines will have different temps even when the air fuel ratio is correct.

so should i have my stock passat's a/f ratio check when it glows red hot at night...

Pretty....shiny.....
Damn, I seriously did not know a turbo could heat up that much under basic usage. Hell, I didn't know any part could heat up like that and maintain structual stability and such what.

more cooling.....good lord that things hot. I'm taking a class right now on compressor and turbine design. your compressor fins are really loosing there ability to handle stresses. Over time your blades will fail. Also, the high temperatures of the turbo is actually cooking the oil (the reason you bought that sweet over priced turbo timer). ahh yes and another problem. oil looses its properties at those high temperatures, or its ability to fight friction. this is also the same oil that is used to lubricate those expensive pistons you may have in your engine. my point is, this is something you should look into. Better cooling is your only friend.
and yes, lean conditions cause higher engine temps as well as more nox which will hurt emmissions.
Good luck, hope this helps
