why no early oil change ?
This is my first post as a new member of this forum. I just bought a 2002 Civic LX and after looking through the owners manual, I'm puzzled about Honda's statement not to change the engine oil early. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and have "broken in" many new cars. As part of the regiment, I always do an oil change at about 250 miles. Before you tell me how rediculous this is, consider that the oil in the drain pan always has lots of tiny metal particles that sparkle when viewed in direct sun light. I don't know why they don't get trapped in the filter, but I do know that I don't want them in the oil of my new car. Any insight as to why Honda is against an early oil change will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

pretty sure schlit is right about the oil
but ignore his other comments.

Schlit,
Are these "wear particles" small enough to not get trapped by the filter? Many of the high performance car makers use Mobile 1 or other synthetic for break in. Why would they do this if they wany high wear during break in?
By the way, I graduated from RIT in 1974 when there were no "wear particles" needed!

I have a hard time believing Honda would use a bypass filtration system today, unless someone's got a link to prove otherwise. Filter media gap is only microns wide, and should filter out most everything that would clog a gap/passage. Apparently some mfrs. use a 'break-in' oil, which does not have as much anti-wear additives as usual.
