best tire & size for 1st gen crx Si in G-Stock?
What is the best tire (make and size) for the 13x5 stock rims? will the Hoosier A3so3 in the 225/45 fit or should I look at a R3so3 in the 185/60?
How about the Kuhmos? what model and size?

Carpenter ran 225/50/13 and 185/60/13s
I never saw him run nationals on the 185s though...but he still was kicking *** at the divisional level with those.
I will sell some of his 185/50/13s as memoribilia if anyone wants. complete with cords showing and all
(only set of his i still have mounted) The rest i have gone through.
Craig Fogleman runs the 225/45 on his CRX, but i will be da#$d if i am going to try to mount and dismount those yet, its hard enough to do the 225/50s

I can't really speak for safety, but there are plenty of 205s on 5" rims. Only once or twice have I had to search for a willing tire shop.

The 225/50-13 is an easy fit and works best
with the gears in the first gen. The 225/45-13
makes for a lot of 2-3 shifts....more chances
to make mistakes.

i know you can put it on, but its a bitch to do so and especially to get off...but im pretty sure you need to have a 5.5 inch width to safely put on a 205, thats why the HX rims are great honda rims...
but then again i dont know 100%...i just know you cant put a 225 on a 5 inch rim...

You're wrong. Racerjon1 has them on his CRX. You can put a 225 on a 5" wheel. It's just not easy, or fun.

The Si came with 14x5s if i'm not mistaken and Carpenter's car was a DX hence the 13" wheels. Although you could probably shoehorn a 225-50-14 on there, it's a much taller tire than the 225-45-13 so rubbin maybe a concern. May be better off with a 205-55-14s.

the '85 Si came with 13 x 5s. The later cars had both longer gearing and 14 x 5s.

I believe that is true for Canada, since the Si was not available in Canada for '85. In the US, the '85 Si was 13X5, like the DX.
I have 3 '85 Sis, all with the 13X5 alloys.

we have gotten it down to 2 min, dismount/mount for the 225/50/13s on the 13x5 honda wheels.
The harder part is actually getting them off. A set of RS03s i had mounted took a bit longer to dismount, and i was almost to the point of getting the cutting wheel out.
A Lot depends on the machine. The one i can do it in 2 min on (with one person helpsing of course) has no hydrolics to compress the tire. I am about to buy 3 sets of S03s and when i mount them i get to try a new one with arms that compress the tire for you.
I know that the bigger tires are not considered "safe" for that small a rim..but I dont buy it. A 205/60/13 Toyo Proxy is an easy mount, and the 215/50/13 BFG Comp TA R1s were not all that bad.
Fogleman, who runs the 225/45s just says its "pretty hard" when describing the mounting process.

alright, cause definatly looking at the tire, it doesnt seem to safe to me...i had a hard time putting on a 225/40/18 on a 18x8 rim and i couldnt imagine trying to get it on a rim that is 3 inches narrower...i could see you wanting to cut the tire trying to get it off...before i was installing tires, i had a set of 205/50/14 on a 14x5 inch rim and 3 shops couldnt get it off at all...

Its not ideal, but since nobody makes a 205/50/13 (which would be just kind of great) we'll keep squeezing on the 225s.
The 205/60 selections are just too tall.

you just made an absolute statement that a ****-ton of people in the autocross community know is blasphemy.
i don't mount my own tires, and i know for a fact that this is possible. seen done many times.

alright and im sorry for it...i was just going by my experience and what i have done and what shops by me can and can not do...i called a shop today and asked about it, they said they will not do it because the tire was too wide and asked if i had a deathwish...
so if you have it on a 5 inch rim, props to you...and the installer

Most shops don't know what they're talking about. A 225/45-13 hoosier isn't any more likely to roll off a 5" rim than a set of crappy 185 all-seasons because the sidewalls are so rediculously stiff. Good thing you were talking like you were on a forum where there are people who know you're wrong, or those you were typing to might have thought, "oh, he sounds like he knows what he's talking about" and gone on to spread the misinformation.
And yes, I have mounted tires. It'd be a bitch and a half, but I think the most dangerous part of running 225/45-13's on 5" wheels would be the installation process.

just like when you ask most alignment shops to give you 1/8 toe out they'll tell you no, or say sure, and then give you zero toe thinking they are saving your ***. you have to know who to take your car to

Yeah, and the minute I had a guy at a tire shop ask why the hell I was mounting bald tires (brand new Hoosiers) I loaded up and went somewhere else.
WHO you get to mount your tires is quite important. I've even had a reputable tire shop tear up a brand new Kumho 205/55/14 putting it on a 14x6 wheel (The "regular" tire guy didn't want to **** with it and had the shop grease lackey do it. This was when I learned to never drop my tires off and leave). The flip side is the Appalachian guys, who (trackside) can put a 225 Hoosier on a 5.5 inch wide wheel in about 30 seconds.
And I HAVE mounted R tires myself which is precisely why I no longer do it. Thats $40 I'll gladly spend.

what if the grease lacky is the guy to have do it?
I worked at a Firestone in high school and college.."general service" in other words...the crap work. But..since i raced and had the experience with low profile/strange sizes I was the one that got to do the nasty stuff. We even got a following for Porsche People that didn't want there rims scratched to take them to me for mounting. Mainly i was "better" because I would take my time..I worked hourly and not on flag hours, so if i wanted to take 30 min to mount a set of Lamborghini tires (which i did twice) I could "afford" it..where the regular mechanics couldn't.
It was strange but cool being the lowest paid guy in the shop..and working on the highest $ stuff.
Thats probably 1 in a million though so i second the advice..find a shop you trust..most SCCA guys will know of a local place and will glady spread the word.

I would try the 185/60-13 on the 13x5 wheel due to the shorter outer diameter giving better gearing and better acceleration off the corners.
