replace camshaft without replacing head gasket?
can i put in a jdm cam on my 89 16 valve hatchback without replacing the head gasket? i have looked in the repair manuals and it does not say. i am looking at a jdm camshaft on ebay. i need to replace the timing belt and the water pump and i would just as soon do it all at once. anybody running a jdm stock cam? is it worth the trouble? thanks.
umm what makes you think you'd have to take of the head. Take off the valve covers, take off the collars that hold the cam down, switch the cam gear to the new cam, put it back on the head, put the collars back on and rester the timing. Bingo your done. Probably an hour job, maybe a little longer for you, you seem a little new at this. All in all a very easy switch. Oh yeah and when your done you have to check your valve lash on each valve and adjust accordingly.
actually no, i'm not new at this. the last 3 cams i replaced on ohc engines were on toyotas. the head bolts go through the cam holders on all of them. you might as well replace the head gasket on 22re's and 4a series engines.
