Header setup Complete!!!
Finally got the Flex pipe today. I had to custom order it from SMSP. 3" inch flex pipe with 3 bolt flanges welded on. Like all of SMS Products, the weld quality is excellent. It was a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.
On to the pictures!
(Header-Tech header + SMSP 3" inch flex pipe + Kteller Cat with 3" inch inlet / 2.5" inch outlet)

(3" inch collector
)

So this summer, I will be installing this header setup, along with Skunk2 Valvepsrings, Skunk2 Retainers, chipped p28, and get it Dyno tuned to 9000rpm.

I'll have to cut a good chunk of my Tanabe Exhaust to make the header fit, so that will kinda suck. Also, the second O2 bung on the Cat is pushed back alot further down... what should I do? Extend the O2 wire, or plug it up since I'll be running OBD1 soon?

Let's see.
SS Header-Tech header - $650.00
SMSP 3" Inch Flex Pipe (Custom order) - $110.00
Kteller High Flow Cat (Custom order) - $160.00
Total - $920.00
I actually bought the Header-Tech header used from VtecVoodoo for an awesome price ($490.00), so the total price it cost ME was $760.00

im having trouble post pics but this link is to my pic gallery from another site. http://www.tamparacing.com/gal...t=500
headertech header w/ custom flex testpipe hooked to my thermal research exhauts. i cut the exhaust befor the resonator and spun it down to line up w/ the header.
not trying to hijack your thread just how i did it.
by the way nice cat and flex pipe!!!!!

yeap. Here in California, it's a minimum fee of $2500.00 if you get caught without a functioning cat. Cops here have a mirror on a stick that check if you have one or not.

I've been running "no cat" for 2 years now.
My old carsound 2.5'' decided to crap out on me (i.e. the honeycomb material inside broke apart and exited through the exhaust after some time...basically became a gutted cat)
So I did this. Had the muffler shop place a straight pipe inside the blown cat and weld everything back up. So a cop can use his mirror all day long. He is going to *SEE* a cat there.

You are running a 3" collector on a NA setup? How many extra cylinders do you have? I got 4 total..... Even with s2s2 cams..... wow, that is a lot of space.....

Relieves stress so the header is less likely to crack.
Damn thats a nice setup.

That header was probably originally designed to be used for race-specific applications, not for street cars with a full exhaust and muffler terminating at the back of the car.
It's not uncommon for 4-cylinder race cars to use a 3" collector and a short length of same diameter pipe terminating behind the driver.

You're still stepping down in diameter which isn't the best for exhaust flow. It will flow well but probably not as well as a 2.5" collector pair with a 2.5" exhaust(assuming a mild build up and not full race). It's like having four onramps onto a 4 lane freeway, then merging into 2 lanes less than a mile down the road. Major traffic jam. Now take the above situation and switch the cars for exhaust pulses and you'll understand what I mean.

This setup should flow a helluva lot better than my USDM DC 4-1 header and stock cat. Thas for sure.
And an all out 3" inch exhaust system will be overkill for my NA setup. Some back pressure is needed, so it won't be too harmful to go from a 3" inch collector to a 2.5" inch exhaust system.
I believe its a different story with boosted cars.

No back pressure is needed. That is what keeps you from making power. The ideal exhaust system will have no backpressure. Just think what backpressure is. Essentially it's "pressure pushing back" against the exhaust. How does that help flow and why would you need it? I'm sure you're going to see great gains. My prediction is a huge jump in midrange, but not as much top end as you would want. Are you running a Skunk2 IM as well? I've got a pretty similar setup as you. Also, I'd think twice about those Ti retainers. I'm about to pull mine skunk2 retainers out after quite a few miles. I'll let you know how they look and let you be the judge. They're not going to help you anyway. An extra 300rpm's isn't going to be much benifit. 9k is unnessecary with stage ones, but I'm sure you've heard it before already.
