CRX problem.
Well just recently in the last few days I've notice my tach jumps all over the place after it gets close or passes 4k..but normally 500rpms at a time..but this doesn't reflect the engine rpms just the tach on the gauge cluster. I'm thinking could something maybe has lossened or maybe the gauge could be broke? This is on a 87 CRX Si with 114k miles on it.
TIA

The tach on my 89 Civic with a ZC does the exact same thing.
I bought a new battery as the old one died and it seemed better, but now its back to the way it was. I have a bad alternator which I am going to replace soon. If that doesn't fix it, the distributor is next on my list.
Also, I checked my ignition contol module with a known good one and that didn't help either...
Good luck finding the problem and if you do, let me know. I'll do the same!

before you go replacing all of the expensive parts, start with the simplest thing. my roomates car did the exact same thing, but sometimes at low rpms too. all she had to do was replace the speedometer cable. her cable came loose and by the time she got it checked out, had ruined it, so she needed to replace it. that will cost a lot less than the distributor, ignition module, battery, and all the other things you guys are starting with first. it's a honda, start simple.

Secondly, my battery was dead, so I needed a new one. This wasn't done to try an alleviate my problem.
Thirdly, when I got a new battery, they tested the electrical system and told me my alternator was bad. Again, will not be replaced to try and alleviate my problem...I NEED to get a working one in there.
Now if none of these NEEDED fixes don't help my tach problem, I am going to attack the distributor.
Thank you.
Check the distributor. My brother had the same problem in his 88 CRX Si. And he took it to a performace shop and they said that it was the distributor. I'm not sure what they replaced but it works fine now. If I'm not mistaken he swapped out the entire unit with a working used one.

The stock tach on my R did that after I hooked up an auto meter 5' unit to it w/ shift light......it was an over load on the stock tach so I took it off and my stock tach works fine now.
breaka_1_9 - before you get all defensive and pissy, just look at what you typed. it sounded like you were replacing all these parts because you wanted to fix that problem, other than the battery. to me it sounded like you were fixing everything before starting with the main part.
and the speedometer was just an example - i wasn't saying it was your speedo, just that when you want to start fixing a problem, you should always start at the source.
