Default What brake pads for relative long life and occasional track days?

While working on my suspension this week I noticed my Hawks HP+ are pretty much shot on one side (caliper had been seized for a while on that side) and the other side already half way through after no more than 15k KMs. I loved these pads to death but I'm thinking of going with something a little longer lasting for my next set but I still want something that will brake on a dime and not fade easily.

So I need you guy's advice. By the way, I'm running PBR Metal Masters in the rear if that can be of any help.

Try the Cobalt's, it's there really great pads, I've had no complaints about em and the life on them is quite long.

Im not sure why everyone is recommending P+ when he says he is looking for a pad to last longer than his HP+ did.
Honestly, your not going to find what you are looking for. I don't think you will be able to find a pad that performs substantially better than the HP+, and lasts much longer. If you are looking to try something new, however, check out the Axxis Ultimate which is a very nice, cheap pad for all around use.

you could try the HPS. it's a smidgen closer to a street pad, which probably means it will last longer.

i had them on my portly (2800lbs) 98 240sx, which i used about a bazillion times at the track, put 10k miles on them, and never had any problems with fading. i didn't have any ducting, and stock rotors.

and they're cheap to boot.

There's nothing you can do about the noise on HP+

My carbotech XP8's squeek less.

I tried the HPS. I thought they werent worth the money over an OEM pad.

I had the same problem when I first tried the HP+. The only time they were happy (meaning quiet) was on track. They are by far the loudest pads I have used and I've tried about 7 different compounds so far.

hawk blue is a racing pad....it will squeel even more, and won't work very well when not up to temp.

The Ultimates and pads like them typically won't last more than 2-3 track weekends. I suggest a dedicated set. I've been happy with Ultimates on the street and XP8s up front for track days. I ran the XP8s on the street for a couple of days, and I didn't die, but they aren't a street pad (no cold friction).

You need to compromise.

i have used HP+ on my prelude for 6 track events on 3 mile and 2.8 mile track braking deep, threshold braking and they never failed me at the tracks that i ran them. so they are holding up fine. and i use them on the street so i think last pretty long. they do squeak a lot and dust a lot but i think that is common among some of the high performance brake pads. im about to switch to axxis ultimates just because i get them cheap and try them out but i like the hP+

I have tracked HP+ a couple of times and found them to be pretty useless pretty quick. They were what I ended up running on the rear of my 944 for a few years (Hawk Blues up front) but trying to run the HP+ on the front was painful. I have co-driven a 944 Turbo auto-xing on Axxis Ultimates and we faded them there. Granted, it was a brake intensive course and we got to some good speeds but that we were fading these things on Big Blacks auto-xing doesn't make me think they'd hold up well for 20 minutes at a time on track. The upside on the Axxis pads is my buddy says they are very drivable on the street (last I asked). The HP+ are enough to make me want to get out and kick wheels - those things drove me nuts.

I would suggest as some others mentioned, getting a spare set of rotors and pads for this purpose. In the end, it won't be that expensive and you'll have the right pad for the right situation. I'd think the Carbotech Panthers, the Hawk Blue (and I am certain Cobalt Friction has a moderate track pad too) would be better in the long run.

I didn't much like my HPS either, thought they were pretty much a waste of time. They're my backup pads in case of chunked pads and they're in my tire trailer at all times, but I'll never put them on the car again unless I have to.

Big for Panther +, again, although they don't really fit what the poster asked for.

yeah same here, I took my car to the track using the Hp+.... they have good initial bite for the first few laps, but after that they get overheated... personally i won't use them again for track

seems like i'm the only one here with a positive experience with the HPS/HP+.

my 240 was pretty much a perfectly balanced car 52/48. i'm guessing you guys are more like 65/35. do you think this places extra load on the front brakes compared to my old car resulting in fade?

I've used the HP+ and liked them, but only at an autocross. Also, my car was 60/40 off the showroom and is probably more like 59/41 these days, it's lost the majority of its weight off the front of the car.

the cobalt friction GT-Sports are a great pad. They do dust alot and squeal a tiny but, it seems like they're going to last forever. I've put about 10,000 miles 4 auto-x's and 4 track days on em and they look new.
