Default '91 Project Civic Needs Some Help.....

I've got a 1991 Honda Civic Lx with a 1.5L SOHC and would like more power. Is the 1.5 SOHC buildable or is a swap going to be necessary? I am running on a tight budget. Also, is it possible to stick 1.6 SOHC VTECH Heads on my 1.5 SOHC non-VTECH Block? If so would I have to change the fuel system to EFI? Give me some ideas for a tight budget builder.

I also need some help with choosing the right transmission to put the most power to the ground. I wanted to know if I bought a trans out of a 91 Civic Si Hatch from the yard, would it fit, or would it be a waste of money? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Oh, it's a 5-speed manual by the way.

Yes the Si tranny bolts right up. One of the best things you can give your 1.5 motor. Do a si intake manifold swap, it's also one of the best things you can do to the motor. Just read my sig, and do whatever's on there!

Sweet! Thanx. Is $400 too much to pay for an Si trans.? By swapping to the Si intake manifold would I have to swap the fuel system to EFI too? Let me know what to do and you will be a god in my books. No one I talk to has time to help me with a, what they call an "Old School Civic", until I found this site. You guys rock!

P.S. Did I mention it was a 4 door sedan? Does that change anything? Hope not.

Thanx. give me some more ideas. I got this civic from my mom back in '99. The motor only has 87k miles on it and still runs strong..... but slow as heck. Up to now the back seats are gone and waiting for a cage. Carpet, spare tire, and factory jack are gone out of the trunk. Modifications to date are as follows: Evolution Motorsports short ram intake, AEM Tru-Time adjustable cam gear, DC Sports 4-2-1 ceramic coated headers, custom two and a quarter inch header-back exhaust system with a Bullet free flow cat and a Jr Dragger inline muffler (thanks to Jerry's Muffler and Brake Shop), and a set of Brembo vented rotors and AEM high performance brake pads. And after all those bolt-on parts the dang thing still only runs a 17.1 in the quarter......... on a cold night! I probably shouldn't expect anything better though. Other than the bolt-ons and the gutted back seats and trunk it's completely stock. I've typed too much for one post now, so I think I'll stop. Like I said any ideas that's not too expensive I'm all ears.

I see you have a EF 4dr too! Tight! Well, I'm running my car at the track this May 8th. I'll let you know what times I pull with the new MPFI swap along with mods in my signature.

Hey, my email is: demonicpleasures@hotmail.com, keep me posted on how it runs. I may come up and watch you run. Email me with details on what time you are going and if you are still going that day. I also am setting up a meet with a friend of mine at his shop on saturday nights. If anyone is interested email me and let me know. I'm trying to get as many people to email me as I can so I can convince him that it is a good idea. Whether you will actually come or not is up to you, I just need the votes. So I need anyone who reads this to email me with a "That's a great idea" or a "Yeah, that sounds cool" kinda thing. Thanx

My bad, I thought you were local. I thought you meant you were running it at Orlando Speedworld in Bithlo. It's a local track here in Orlando, FL. My grandma used to live in MN. Theif River Falls, to be exact. You know were I'm talking about? Which part of MN you from?

like some people have mentioned...
- MPFI
- Si Cam
- Si tranny

those are usually the best way to start with a d15b2... I just finished MPFI this weekend.. let me tell ya, its night and day difference.. I was surprised how much faster it feels now.... Next thing im gonna be doing is a cam, most likely out of an Si... Then that'll probably be it for now until I get the car repainted, if the paint turns out good tho, and I get really attached to the car, i'll most likely plan a swap.. each thing probably costs about $200 to do.. so with about $600, you can make a very noticible difference out of your little 1.5L

but for now, you should be looking into those 3 things, they'll make the biggest difference.

Sweet, I've got the hang of it now. Thanx for all you suggestions, they were much appreciated. I'm gonna start with the Si intake manifold swap and then go from there. You guys were very helpful. Thank you

Hcivic88, I think I am going to do Si tranny, then MPFI, then Si cam. That sounds like a good sequence to me.
