Default PAINTING RIMS....

hey... ok i was trying to paint my rims today... i got the wheel primer and paint and clear coat and all... but when i was stripping the old paint off i was having a little trouble... i only got about 3/4 of the paint off of the rims... and i ran out of aircraft remover so i have to wait until tommorow and the wheels are 3/4 stripped to the metal... so will this be ok to sit until tommorow when i finish them or will they start to rust up???? also... for those who have done this... how many times did you have to spray and wipe before it came off??

Lets be honest here...why wouldnt you just wait until you get the other 1/4 of the paint off? Isnt that common sense? Not to be a dick but ya know.. It should not rust. and even if it does, it will be no more than your brake rotors do overnight.

As far as painting them, I never used primer or clear coat. But I just make a bunch of very light coats letting it dry inbetween. Averaging about 3/4 a can of paint per wheel or less. Good luck. What wheels are you painting and what color?

Yeah i usually just clean my wheels off and then paint over them but you dont have to worry about rust i dont think, it takes time for things to start rusting

OKKKKKKKKK, for everyone who thinks the duplicolor wheel spray paint isnt good, ur wrong , of couse these ones look like **** because the previous owner was a idiot and i have no idea what he painted them with.... but at autozone, get duplicolor wheel primer, duplicolor wheel base coat (comes in some sweet colors to ) and some duplicolor clear coat, and just spray it on light coats, and it will look just like a paint gun, and on my other car, they have lasted about 3 years now and still in same condition as day 1 and look the same as my friends that he got painted for about $200... mine wer a little less than $15 hah

dont worry about getting all the paint off, just make sure it is free of oil/dirt.
I used coarse sandpaper, then primed it, wet sanded it down, then sprayed the color i wanted. it's been several months and it's holdin up fine.

I hear good things about the duplicolor. Me and friend were talking about using wheel paint for my entire car. Haha

damn...all this talk of wheel painting is giving me ideas...one question i'd like to ask here is..how many just paint the rims with the tires still on??i'm guessing about 80% or more just do them that way(if your going cheap..might as well save money on that too right) ..on a side note..the April 2004 issue of Option2 has an article of a silvia being completely painted with spray cans(color change from a dark blue silvia to hot pink..its a girls car btw )so..just because it came from a rattle can doesnt mean its not gonna give decent results..word

I'm not a huge fan of paint stripper, it's messy as hell and it's expensive. I use my air die grinder with a wire wheel to take the paint off or i just use a heat gun. I think the heat gun approach is the best for taking of paint.

As for spray paint i love the stuff. I AM Mr. spray paint. I spray paint everything. IT"S ALL IN THE PREP. Spray paint lasts forever if you prep it properly. Clean and degrease, prime, paint and clearcoat and i'tll last forever

okay..i gotta chime in here one last time..feel free to flame after my question..lets say..i wanted to paint my black slips a bright red..or..hypothetically..a bright green(TAKATA harness green)..what type or brand of paint would do that over a black surface(or does it matter)..my rims are flawless with no scratches so..i'd be super lazy and just spray right over the black..thanks for hearing my stupid question..and..flame away or offer advice

Don't even bother stripping the wheels. Paint sticks to old paint better than it sticks to bare metal. Just sand the suface with a medium grit sand paper and then paint.
I used the dupli color gunmetal paint on my wheels and I used less than 1 can. I can vouch that that paint rulez too. I didn't even prime or clear and they're standing up fine. You can use cards to keep the paint off your tires so you don't have to remove them. I used O-pee-chee hockey cars and yes, I am Canadian.
