Default Transmission-Gearbox Oil help

Hi,

I'm about to change my transmission oil but I don't know which one to use. I thought maybe a synthetic oil, but some people told me to use normal 80W-90 oil.

What do you recommend?

I think it must use a special oil, I mean, not normal, because it's a high revving engine, but which oil? What can happen if i use normal 80W-90 oil?

If you can you should get Honda MTF fluid from a Honda dealership. I think 80w-90w is pretty damn thick oil to be using in the tranny. If you do you will experience probly some serious grinding and probly won't be able to shift gears. If you have to use motor oil then I would recommend 10w-30 or 10w-40. The problem is that the person who recommend such a heavy weight oil is that he thought you were driving a rear wheel drive car.

Whoever told you to use 80w-90 has no idea what they're talking about (that's the kind of gear lube you would put into a pickup's differential). Just use Honda MTF as specified in the owners manual - works great, is formulated for the tranny and its cheap.

I dunno what to do.
I thought 80w-90 was a good oil for transmission because i saw an EK4 Civic in a web page, and it used that oil.
I found Castrol Syntec 75w-90. Its supposed to be good.
Honda dealers dont really sell oils as in USA or Japan. They usually use aftermarket oils, so i dunno what to do now.
Please help meeee!!!! What oil????
Oh, i forgot, i have LSD, its the S80 96 Spec gearbox.

I had this same *exact* set of questions before I changed my tranny fluid. As everyone has said, use Honda MTL. Your local Honda or Acura dealer should have it.

Do *NOT* use the heavy diff fluid. Our trannies are not designed for it. Please read your users manual. It says in a pinch, use motor oil of a certain weight. I'm not going to tell you which one, because I want you to read it for yourself. (I know this cause I couldn't believe it myself until I did.)

Use the experience and wisdom of this group. They have gone before us and have the answers to our questions.

If you can't find MTL, I'll buy some for you and ship it to you. Just pay the price of the tranny fluid and shipping (and handling if any).

Marciano

Honda MTF unless your **** is notchy or scratchy, then you might want to try GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. Might prolong the inevitable, new synchros, but it helped my tranny.

Yeah if you don't mind your synchros wearing out faster, get synchromesh. Otherwise stick with HMTF and call it a day.

If your tranny grinds, you should try mixing the two until the grind goes away. A lot of people don't know that the friction modifiers in synchromesh cause your synchros to run out faster...they just see that someone's grind went away and their shifts are "excellent and smooth" so they get it too. Blind leading the blind.

Try a 50/50 mix of synchromesh and HMTF if you have a grind...if the grind goes away, try different proportions, taking the synchromesh part down some and raising the proportion of HMTF.

If you can't get HMTF just use some castrol 10w-30, they are the same damn thing. Honda just charges you $15 a bottle for motor oil wrapped up. I'm sure other honda-tech members will know this...

Sorry, I highly doubt that.

Stick with Honda MTF

I did the whole syncromesh thing but I believe in Honda over all.

There is nothing special about syncromesh, it is syncromesh modified that everyone is raving about.

Honda MTF is defintely a gear oil of some type... take of wiff of it and you smells like any other gear oil, not like motor oil.

Previously to Honda having MTF, the owners manual specified 10W30 or 10W40 motor oil. My buddie's 1994 Integra manual states 10W30 while my 1998 manual says MTF. I have used 10W30 with no ill effects. Your milage may vary.

It's about that time for me to change the tranny fluid again. I change it about every 15K. The OEM Honda MTF did not make a good impression on me so I decided to use RP. I originaly wanted to use RP SyncroMAX but the tech representivie said it is to light for daily driving and ocasional AutoX.
He suggested that I used RP Racing 21 or RP 5w-30 for my tranny. He said that Honda MTF is a 30 weight so this substitute would be good. I went and bought 2 qts. of RP Racing 21 for $7.49 a qt. I'm going to change it out on Monday when I put the Double X-Brace on.

A honda tech told me to use nothing but the Honda MTF but I want to try something else. I use RP 10w-30 for the engine and love it.

What is ya'lls take on this fluid? What fluid are you guys using? Do you think this will do harm to the tranny?

BTW..This will be done on an EP

Honda MTF only here. No need to use another and not just because it's cool to do. I already ran a synthetic that shall remain nameless and it was noticably notchy as Hell. Switched back to Honda MTF and all was better and very clear to me.

Remember to change your fluid more often when using the Honda stuff. I recommend after every couple races or 10k miles. It is cheap so no need to keep it in there.
