Default Is A Bypass Valve Needed For The Winter?

hi i'm wondering if a bypass valve should be needed if i plan to drive my car during the winter during times of snow. if was to go with a bypass valve it would be an AEM CAI for sure but if the bypass valve is not needed i would rather go with the AEM V2 considering it's an extra 3hp to the wheel. (ive herd lots a bad stories about intake sucking water in and i'm scared :&lt anyways is the by passvalve needed? thanx for the info

the bypass valve isn't needed on the prelude as much as the civics/tegs. The filter on the prelude sits higher. It is mainly a matter of your own personal comfort, however if you are lowered you may want to consider it. Be aware that the bypass doesn't work unless the filter is almost submerged and the filter can supposedly cause a loss of hp (when compared to the aem cai without the bypass).

I personally have the aem cai and opted not to install the bypass valve (after searching ). I just put the clutch in and idle through any deep water that i may have to traverse. Or just make sure your rpms are low and you shouldn't suck any water in (unless the filter is submerged). Also as far as the V2 is concerned, don't believe the hype and just get a regular cai.

Yep that guy is right i have AEM cold air on my 98 accord coupe for 2 years now and as long as it doesnt get completly submerged no water will be sucked in.

behan, i'm a noobie to ludes, just got this past week, used to be into 4x4 jeeps, now crossin over to the speed side...back on track, i'm starting to buy mods for the 2000 vtec 5 spd and i was going to start with with AEM cai, then a buddy of mine with a 95 civ told me to look into the V2s, i did, havent purchased yet, i would appreciate it if you (or anyone else) could elaborate to a beginner why you feel the regular cai is more beneficial than the V2... sorry for the long-*** newbie question....thanks in advance...

Reply to Slam168: I just drove my '01 'lude through this past winter in NY/NJ/MD with 1st gen. AEM CAI. Nothing, nada. It works perfectly without the bypass valve.

Reply to preludeez: The 1st gen. AEM CAI is pretty good already. Never used V2 CAI so can't tell. But money wise, the 1st gen is definitely worth it.

ya my car is lowered by 2inches but after hearing all these peoples comments maybe a bypass valve isn't needed cuz i don't wanna risk losing hp gain thats why i was considering the V2. if i wasn't getting a bypass valve should i just go for the V2 then to get that little extra hp?

you should just get the AEM v1..its a true cold air vs the AEM v2 which is basically a "short ram" based on where the filter sits

simply put, the regular cai is better because of the price. IMO the V2 is just a gimmick and even if it did work the extra money you would spend wouldn't be worth the gains. Just stick to a regular cai.

i would say yeah just incase ... because .. you will never know about sucking water .. hydrolocked .. this happen to me before ... i sucked so much water i blew my engine .. so i think u should keep in mind of putting by pass valve or .. take out your cold air intake for now .. because of the water or winter ..
