nitrious for track?
is there any way to set up nitrous on a NA car for track use? i also read up on other post about how nitrous fries holes onto your pistons and valves. is nitrous really that much dangerous to use than lets say turbo? i just want an occasional boost when i need it so i m not out for a lot of power.
I'm hoping by "track" he means "drag strip". Then he's just in the wrong forum.

You'll need to put about 4 nitrous tanks in the car, but don't worry about adding any extra fuel when using the nitrous. Don't worry about upgrading the brakes, make sure you don't have an instructor in the car and spray down the whole front straight.

He was joking.
Blowing up the motor is a safety concern (oiling down the track) as are the bottles themselves. If you were to hit something, you could have a huge problem for yourself and the corner workers.

Dont hate cuz you have 52 hp at the wheelz

Looking at your "sig", and see you have a "bone stock GSR". Leave it that way for track days. However IF you were going to upgrade anything, think about upgrading your brakes... just pads and fluid is all you'll need... not those big, bling-bling, fancy thangs either.
Have you tried autocrossing yet? It's a great place to learn car control at a lower speed. If you do get yourself to a track day, aka High Performance Driver's Education (HPDE), make sure you go where instructors are in your car. (You'd be surprised at the number of events I've been to that folks are on the track by themselves for the first time)
And I'll second the Welcome... Welcome to the RR/AX forum!
No NOS on the track please... maybe some whipped cream or crazy glue would be better.

ok koo... i got suspension down already ( at least i hope so). and i m currently upgrading pads, lines and fluid. anything else that would be nice to have for track prep? i know driving skill is a biggie so please abstain from telling me this.

Replace that Miata with my Civic, the track with Gateway, and imagine subsequent pictures showing me further and further away from the vipers and you'll have a good idea of last Saturday.
I could have used more power, the vipers, meh, they didn't need any more.
Afterwards I found out that my car is turbocharged, much to my surprise.

Why would a properly installed nitrous system not pass tech at an event? I can think of several groups out west that wouldn't object, assuming you installed it correctly. One could say that an Accusump with all it's hoses and pressure is just as much a risk of oiling the track as an engine grenaded by nitrous (perhaps moreso...)

it depends on the club your driving with. ive teched for nasa before and contrary to what chad said its not allowed to be used. aparently it doesnt matter if its in your car or not. i do know of a couple clubs in az that are no2 friendly. :cough: azra :cough cough:
jeff <--- who isnt a fan of nitrous on a road track at all

hi guys.
i'll chime in here with some ACTUAL experience, not conjecture.
way back in the day (circa 1994-95) when i was just an intermediate driver doing DEs with the Porsche Club, my cousin and i used to go together to most of the events in our area. at the time, he was driving a 1990 Miata with a few minor mods, and i was driving a brand new VW GTI VR6. he would dominate in the twisties, and i would devour him on the power sections. it always came out that i was about 2 secs per lap faster on a 90 second track; this was especially the case at Summit Point.
he boo-hooed about this constantly; he wanted to get a turbo, or a Jackson blower, or blah blah blah. but too much money, of course..... so, he ended up getting a NOS system ($375 vs. $3500). he went with a 40 hp setup, and it was setup proffesionally at a hotrod shop. i went over to his house, and it felt GOOD.
we went to the drag strip at Cecil County, and ran a 17.1 off the juice, and a 14.70 on the bottle. big big difference!
well, the next track event came around, and it was at Summit. he went through tech without the bottle in the car. he ran all day saturday without the bottle. sat night, we put the full bottle back in......
sunday, we went out together. suddenly, he was running 4 seconds per lap faster; he was only using the juice on the front straight, between turn 2 and 5, and between 9 and 10. (he had a little arming switch on the left side that he could flip on and off; when armed on, if the pedal was floored, the NOS flowed).
he ran all day like this; he ran out of NOS early in the 4th rungroup, which was hilarious. going down the front straight, suddenly HUGE clouds of black black smoke pouring out, and the car going SLOW!; that was all the extra fuel going in without any nitrous to burn with it!!!!
car ran great; zero problems. it was priceless seeing the 911s that had stomped him the day before trying to figure out what had happened to change all that on sunday.....
so, it can be done. and the car can survive. would i do it? no.
but it was funny as hell to watch it go!!!
todd
ps remember, this was an early miata. those are some TOUGH motors. and it was a reasonable, small shot. my guess is that a GSR would not stand up.....
