Did a search but all I found was digital camera stuff in appearance/cosmetic.
Finally got my IO Port camera mount installed for this weekend's event. Now I just need a video camera!
I'd prefer not to spend over $400.00, but we'll see what you all have to say. So let's see it!

http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_....html - i'll be picking one of these up eventually, have heard pretty good reviews.
Now, why exactly would you want a $400 camcorder in j00r car?
Cheaper = better...these things will take a beating, will get hit with things, will be subjected to crazy vibrations, may get splashed with water.
And do you really need a very good image quality for an hpde event?
Buy something cheap...maybe even used...that would be my advice.

Garbage in = ......
If you're using shitty video, whats the point of taking it in the first place? What do you have to learn/study from if the footage is fuzzy and/or out of focus half the time?
http://reviews.cnet.com/Canon_...g=box - can be had for just over $300 anyways.

you're telling me that j00're going to learn more from f00tage taken from a $300-400 camera than a $150 camera?
I think not....the quality is going to very comparable where it counts, you'll prolly notice the difference in sound, maybe details, z00m, low light conditions, color nuances...etc...none of which is needed with track f00tage.
If j00r f00tage is fuzzy or out of focus that just means that j00 suck at the videotaping

Your mom doesnt complain about the f00tage quality

Edit: I'll look for a similar camera used before I buy a new one anyways. I'm in no hurry to pick it up.

I don't know how much extra a video camera w/ image stablization, but I've seen vids recorded without this feature and they were almost unwatchable.
Get a good Hi-8 with that function and you won't be sorry.

and mounting the camera to the mount is just 1 screw and a safety strap?

just seems like it would bounce around a lot with my mad street racing shifting skillz
a remote is handy if you dont have crew to turn the camera on for you. Otherwise you end up with at least 5 mins of thrilling video of the grid

no, it wont. One bolt is enough...how else would you mount it? The camera has only one threaded hole in it....

I am interested in this topic too in that I am in the market for a camcorder for in-car. Improved touring had a good thread a few months ago about very cheap "lipstick" like lenses that plug in auxilary that gives you a lot wider angle. I am going to look for a camcorder with this capability. Can see more of the driver, the track, and well it just looks faster on video with a wide angle. Funny when you watch in-car footage and you know you are doing 100mph at some point and it looks like 50mph.

Here this discussion on improved touring might help.

the above thread description that I cut and paste looks wrong for some reason. If it does not work just do a search for "lipstick" on http://www.improvedtouring.com and two pretty good discussions of cam corder choice, mountings pro and con, and lipstick cams come up. One suggestion was to delete the IO Port mount, buy the lipstick wide angle, mount your camcorder down low and safer in the car and run the lipstick from the A/V port up to where you want to mount it on your roll bar/cage.

If you're going to use a lipstick camera, why bother with the camera at all? Just hook it straight to a recorder. From what I've seen, the novelty of the odd camera placement will eventually wear off but the quality will still suck.

does anyone have a picture of it actually mounted in their car as well. I mounted mine to the main hoop in the kirk racing roll bar just to the driver's side of the cross brace. I just feel like my helmet might block the picture or if I have a passenger, it'll block the picture.
Marc,
If you're running Sebring again I would suggest something better than an 8mm, I used my Sony TRV57 for the last 3 Sebring events I did and the video was shakier than I would've liked it to be. Mine was also mounted to the same IoPort camera mount, and I did just fine w/ the screw and the strap, but I wrapped the strap around the camera a few times too. Next time I go there I will definitely have a MiniDV instead Sebring is a rough track and does require a slightly better camera.

I use a Canon ZR-60 for HPDE & auto-x...It is a mini-DV camera so you can easily upload videos to your computer through firewire..It also has image-stabilization so the picture doesn't shake (unless I go off-roading
) & comes with a remote control. The only bad part about the canon's is that the tape is bottom loading, so when it's attached to the camera mount - you can't change tapes. I also bought a cheap $30 wide angle lens to put on the camera. If you're looking to save some money, I would look at any of the Canon's ZR's below 80 (80,85, & 90 are the newest models) - they change them slightly about once a year. There is no real difference between the ZR-40, ZR-60, or the brand new ZR-80
