How difficult is it to install a DVD/LCD headunit?
I asked a local stereo store and they want to charge me $150. They tell me that there is a lot of things involved and that it's a little complicated. I've installed many decks before and I was wondering if it is basically the same thing?
If you know how to install a Cd player into your car.. a monitor like that should be pretty easy.... with monitors compared to a normal cd player hu.. the monitor usally has 1 (maybe2) wires extra so you cant watch video while in motion.. besides that.. same dilly.. PS thats also easy to bypass if your wondering..
Feel free to correct me if im wrong anyone

he is right they are preaty easy to install they are some more wires but if u take your time and read what the wires are u shouldent have any problumes to bypass the wire to make prevent the dvd player from workin just ground out the ebreak wire
dude dont pay anyone to put a frikin TV in your car unless its gonna be like 20-30 bucks by a friend...If you can install a regular radio then this will be so cake...If you can get a wiring harness, you can do it at your kitchen table then pop the radio in the car...
Theres only one complication and thats one of the wires thats hooked up to your brake...It will sense if the car is in park and that will be the only time you can watch TV. Theres an easy way to bypass that so when you get to that point, do a search on Honda Tech or just ask and we'll help you out....

wrong..depending on some units may require remote wiring for the "brain/hideaway unit"
that kvt may be my next tv as well.. and i know for sure that it requires "remote" wiring for the hideaway unit..
so you find a place to hide the hideaway unit, rear seat/under passengar or driver seat, now you have to get power to it from the original head unit power source.. so basically you have to hook up everything to the hideaway unit, IE: front right speaker, remote, antenna, etc. etc...
thats basically how we installed my pioneer..
the kvt is one of the most unique monitors out there... to date. just the way it flips in and out is amazing and i know of course you have seen..
as far as the "parking brake wire" on the pioneer it is a green wire that requires it to be grounded, so just ground it to the chassis, I am not sure how the kenwood is... but alpine requires a module for you to view it while you are driving..

honda tech= 98% o i think i know, 2% actual fact....

I'm aware of the hideaway unit. I was planning on putting it under the passenger seat. I'm so sick of the stereo store trying to rip me off. They're always full of ****. By the way, I already know how to ground the e-brake wire to trick the unit that the vehicle is in park. Thanks guys.
This is correct. The kenwood has the extra box where the tuner, amp, etc is all contained. Not to mention for some reason there are like 3 or 4 sets of wires that run between the brain and the screen unit its self (but even wtih just 1 or 2 of the plugs hooked up it worked fine). It gets a little tight on some cars with all that crap back there (Like the preludes). It's easiest to rip your passenger seat out, pull the carpet up on that side, and mount the unit and run the wires on that side.

What would give you the impression that the shop was trying to rip
you off? What you were quoted was the tyical going price for a unit
of this caliber....If you dont want to pay them to do it..take on the
yourself. All you have to lose is hours of your life while you figure
it all out.

Not to flame but WTF....
I have been installing (shade tree & professional) for
just a 'lil over20 years ( damn I'm old
)
and what I see from the "new jack installers" scares me.
Not because i'm 'old skool' but because any with an internet
connection and a lil time can be an 'expert. Here lies the problem.
With the 'answers' readily available....no one wants to study the
material and learn anything. For example: IDV units
how to interface with the video lockout...the installation
schematic tells you how in b/w but the avg person can't
understand it ( not really a bad thing when you think about
it) so they just fumble along...want proof:
A. the kid who cuts off the Kenwood radio data cord because
he did'nt think it was needed.
B. a '96 cavalier owner with a broken dash because her pal
thought it just snapped off.
C. The gut who could not understand why the bass would
go away when he shut his door and why he had to replace
so many fuses....he ran the power line through the door
jamb and it had chaffed through...he always installed it
like this and never had any problems.
Look I'm not against the DIY guy ( i was once one still am ).
I have said it before " Know your skill level ". Trying to exceed
this can cost you more time and money in the long run. I tell
this to everyone " I hate fixing your F#@%UPS"...because
its never a simple task. Shops charge on the avg a fair rate
just because I can install the radio in that '96 cavalier in
about 20 mins (total diassembly intsall reassembly and program
presets and vaccumn out car) while it would prob take you a lot
longer...Experience is the key here.
have fun
