well its been doing that as long as i can remember. it literally blasts out of the vents. especially after i give it to get on the highway....i wonder if its some sort of safety mechanism to prevent overheating...but i dont think my car is running hot

Never heard of this. Which vents is it coming out of ? Does it change if you change the climate control setting ?
Air will always come through those vents even if you have the fan "off". All that setting means is that the blower motor is not on.
As far as it "blasting" out, well, I don't know exactly what you mean by that, but, I can see it coming out like there is a turbo on the other side of them.

JunIntegra - is your climate control set to recirculated or fresh air? if its fresh, thats normal.

Check the valve under the hood and make sure it's moving back and forth with the cable.

no, its not suppose to come on. Last I checked it was a cable connection to right? So its not some sort of electrical spoof either.

not normal, i'd be pissed if it were summer

Actually, im pretty sure it is. Most cars do it, specially mine. However, I dont know about the blasting part, I mean I can feel it, but its not like 3 or 4 setting blasting...
It's simply just the vent being open.
If the temperature is on HOT, then hot air will come out. If it's on COLD, then cold air will come out. Simple as that.
If you don't want any air coming in, switch on the RECIRCULATE button or just turn the temperature **** to COLD.

To answer your question first YES it si perfectly normal for the heat to come out of the vents.
Problem:
The reason there is hot air seaping out of your vents is because your outside/fresh air induction vent is opened (note: this is default mode) and when you move at high way speeds it creates a ram air effect forcing air from the outside into and through your ventilation system and then out the vents into your car.
Solution:
There is a very simple method of overcomming this so called "highway heat seaping," simply press the recycle air button as shown below on fig.1, which, therby closes the vent located on the outside the car, thus preventing any external air from travel into the ventelation system during highway speeds.

by the OP's description, it sounded like his fan turns on full blast at high speeds automatically... or perhaps he was just over exaggerating.

My goodness, let's get to know our cars better. I hope some of these comments were sarcastic.
From the descriptions of the threadstarter, 'full blast' seems more than the climate control set to 'fresh'. But then again I've never heard of climate control cutting on by themselves, so...

Depending on your speed ie. 125 MPH this could very well seem like a full blast #4 fan, given your ventelation system is set to default. (a.k.a your recycle air is not activated).
