um no. dampen (v.) means WET. damp (v., not adj.) means suppress. so its "damping". the misuse of the word dampening has caused it to be understood as meaning 'suppress', but its as wrong as 'potatoe'.
oh and, just get any one of the numerous spring kits that match your ride height and spring needs. read my faq for reasons why.

LOLOLOLOL!!! What's even funnier is that someone actually believed you! LMFAO.
Dampening is the correct word, you actually have the two meanings backwards. Please consult a dictionary if you think I'm wrong...

Ok, I'm gonna let you off the hook.. The dictionary shows both terms being used in basically the same ways.

btw, this is all academic for me, i dont mean to make it into a pissing match.
yes, like i said, because ppl like you who think potato CAN be spelled with an E, dampen is accepted as the physical meaning to reduce oscillations as well. however any engineering book will call what we say a shock absorber as "damper", not "dampener". look at the actual roots of the words and its use and some of the definitions ive given you. youll find "dampen" is labelled as the misused expression of "damp".

No pissing match at all, purely academic for me as well.
I'd never heard of the word damping being used to describe a shock absorber, so I assumed you had the two mixed up.
What is confusing is that the dictionary shows pratically the same definitions for both. It's only when you break them down to the root words, like you said, that the meanings become clearly defined.
Just goes to show just how much the English language sucks!

well a shock absorber is traditionally called a dashpot anyway, but you wont ever hear that in america outside an engineering vibrations class.
to your defense, it does seem the american-heritage dictionary screws it up by using the word dampen unappropriately. but that just goes to show how dynamic the english language really can be and a dictionary is only a reflection of the "commonly understood and used" lexicon. but i dont see any engineering books define damp, damping, damper wrong.
