Is a sealant nessary for a new head gasket?
I saw this at the auto store...and I'm replacing the head gasket on my 97 gsr for the first time...is this nessary?

Not necessary, but it does help some. I use it on every headgasket I install for extra security. Just make sure you let it dry a bit before bolting the head on.

Excellent point......Try using the Copper Spray, it is better to be safe and not sorry.

I would not use Hondabond on a head gasket because it's so thick, and also I think Hondabond is usually meant for rubber gaskets. It would probably hinder the headgasket from sealing properly.

do NOT use hondabond on your headgasket, its great for the valvecover gasket, not for the headgasket. Anyway, I didnt use any on mine and I havent had any problems yet.
