Tire Question? Stupid to get new tires 3 days before track time?
Hey Guys, Ill be heading over to Willow Springs this friday for a track event that Redline Track Events is holding.
I currently have 195/55/15 Kumho Ecsta Supra Tires on the R (Came with the car when I bought it a year ago). I dont feel that it is as responsive as I would like, especially with over 80% tread left on them. Anyway, I was thinking of getting the Yoko. Es100's (195/55/15) tomorrow afternoon. My question is: Do tires require a break-in period? Is it bad to go to the track with practically brand-new tires? They wont be getting more then 300 miles on them before hitting the track.
Thanks..
BTW, has anyone had any experience with Advan Neova's?
If anyone is interested in going. IM me.

The 300 miles driving to the track will be enough to break them in.
However, I would just keep using what you've got on there, since they've got plenty of tread. If you don't have much track experience (sounds like you don't), then you're not going to be limited by your tires anyway. And if you DO have a lot of track experience, you'll want to get a separate set of track tires (R compound tires).
$.02

Speaking seriously, though... you can think of the tires that people tend to use on the ITR as falling into three performance categories:
a. R compound tires - Toyo RA-1, Yokohama A032R, Kumho V700 Victoracer, Kumho Ecsta V700, etc
b. highest-performance street tires - Bridgestone RE010, Bridgestone S-03, Falken Azenis Sport, etc
c. budget performance street tires - Yokohama ES100, Kumho Ecsta Supra 712, etc
Now think about what you're asking, and put it into this perspective. You are saying that you are willing to trash a set of category (c) tires with 80 percent tread remaining, in order to buy another set of category (c) tires. See where I'm going? If you really want to move up in performance, you should move up at least to category (b) and maybe even to category (a) - not just to another category (c) tire (even though I realize that the ES100 is better than the Kumho).
Again, though, I don't think your tires are going to be a limiting factor if you're a track newbie. You'll be spending all your time learning what the track event is all about, learning the line on the track, learning where to brake and how fast to take each turn, that you are unlikely to be worried about how well your tires will be performing.
That makes $.04

I have A032Rs in the garage and I'll be using them this weekend at Putnam Park (driving there on my RE010 and swapping at the track). I'm trying to use them up so I can start using the set of new RA-1s that I have.
I have six track wheels so I can trash up to two track tires in a weekend before running out.
