Default Accord 97

Hey guys I was driving back from work today and soon as I got home I saw that engine temperature was at Hot and vapor was coming out of my front hood. I popped open the hood and saw what looked like vapor coming out of a hose or something of sorts.

Anything I can do here?

Have you checked your fluid coolant level?

Max as in to the top? or top of the max fill line?

Whats the fluid level at cold?

I would be leaning towards thermostat.

Do your fans kick on?

They are't supossed to start when you start the car. When you turn on your ac do the fans turn on? Or your car has been on for a while do the fans ever kick on? The fans turn on after your temp goes up to a certain level to keep the optimum operating tempurature.

okay honda cooling 101

the cooling system you looking at is called water cool system.

it maintain a certain temperature for the engine to run properly by putting 1.1bar (or sometime more) of pressure in the sealed cooling system. The pressure raise the boiling point of the coolant. The coolant itself is some what resist to boil.

the Radiator in front is a heat exchanger, when air going pass the radiator 's aluminum/brass fins, it carry away about 100 degree of temperature from the top of the rad to the bottom(left to right if you drive a corvette, side way radiator )

the radiator hose connects the radiator to the engine block, it's flexible because the motor move on higher rpms.
The top hose (for most honda) carries hot coolant from the engine to radiator, the bottom hose carries the cooler coolant back to the engine.

think of the thermostat like a gate, when the temperature is getting hot, the gate open and allow more circling of coolant=bringing the temp down.

and here some useful idea.

the first thing you want to check is the cooling fan, check the fuse first.

if the hose is getting old and leaking, get a new sets. It should be pretty easy to spot(when hot coolant is shooting out)

a sticky thermostat could cause this problem too, especially with after-market thermostat. Use Honda's OEM stat only not even that much more compare to auto zone's stuff.

Hey guys I found out what the problem is, it looks like one of the hoses, looks like the heater hose.. has a dime sized hole and is leaking anti-freeze. Which is what I believe is causing my engine to over heat.

Is there a map of the 97' accord engine I can look at to see extactly which hose to buy?

I'd replace both the lower and upper radiator hoses. I'm sure they're the same age. So if one has sprung a leak its just a matter of time the other will.
