Default CTR Lip: Paint removal, prep advise

Hey guys,

I searched but wasnt able to find much.

The lip (OEM) i bought is painted red right now and what i want to do is spray it black for a little while till my car goes in for paint.

The lip has some scratches, etc and i want to get it all nice n smooth before i paint it.

What i need to know is, what is the proper way to do this?
Should i use sandpaper to strip the paint?

Any advise is appreciated.

The lip is in fair condition. No cracks but there are some chip in the paint and a few scratches. I'd like to get it all smooth before paint.

What is the lip made from? ABS plastic?

I am wondering along the same lines, I have an ABS plastic lip that I need to paint. I thought about scuffing but am not sure how well the ABS plastic would take to that? I don't want to see any little scratches and stuff.

However, if you have paint on there already I would scuff with a very fine grit (1500??) maybe even finer then paint right over.

It's not abs plastic. Not sure exactly what its made of...its an OEM SiR (CTR) lip.

Scuffing it with a fine grip paper will probably be sufficient to get the new paint to stick but i wanna fill/cover the scratches, chips first.

Hmm if there is chips in the paint and stuff.. I would recommend sanding the paint almost right off (start from scratch). Filling in paint chips or chips in the bumper with say body or plastic filler is OK but not long term. I would completely strip the paint down then repaint.

What should i use to strip the existing paint? A chemical(what kind) or sandpaper(what grits)?

Any help/info is appreciated.

I guess you could use varsol or something, may take a lot of elbow grease. I would use a block sander and go at it personally, until the paint was all off or close to it and the lip is smooth and flush. Once you get the lip repainted you can wet sand it if there is any orange peel in the paint.
