Wow cheap what to look for?
I am getting a b18b1 99 motor from a shop by my house. For a 1000 dollars full swap minus the ecu that seems really cheap to me. The motor is out of the car so I am wondering what are some things I can look at to see if it is a good motor, or what to look out for to see if it is a piece of ****.

Doing a leak down is about the only thing I can really think of that would be an effective test, unless the shop has an engine dyno and will hook it up on that for you. Most shops dont have a way to run an engine outside of a car, so there cant really be a true compression test.

How can I do a compression test if it is out of the car? I was wondering things like maybe check the spark plugs to see how they have been worn out, maybe look at the cams and see the coloration. **** I dont even know. How do I find out if it is stolen?

As long as you can turn the crank, you can do a compression and leakdown test.
