Idle drops, near kill, engine light, noise in distributor? 4th gen
Hi, I'm new to hondas and new to the forums.
A couple months ago i picked up my manual 92 accord and it was running great until a few days ago, when I noticed a couple different strange sounds, quickly resulting in a +/- 500 rpm drop while idling, or even while slowing down. It drops down to about 100-200 rpms and feels like it wants to kill.
After 10 to 30 minutes of driving the 'Check engine' light goes on.
The sounds all seem to be coming from the distributor, though i could be wrong, but it also feels like they are if i hold the plastic casing.
I would describe them as either a series of clicks, or a half second chirping, or a half second grinding.
Hayne's manual doesn't say much about disrtibutors, if you don't know what may be causing this, do you know any other good mechanical/repair information sources that might help?
Thanks a bunch!

Check the code......Where the ECu is run a paper clip and short out where the code reader is. Count the blinks and that's how you know the code. Up and down rpms sounds like it could be the fast idle valve on the distributor.
Could be a distributor bearing going out.
When mine went out, it sounded like a bunch of rocks in the cap. Opened it up and found that all the points had been sheared off by the rotor.

Take a long screwdriver and hold the handle to your ear with the car running. Stick the tip of the screwdriver on the distributor and run the rpms up and down a little. If it's the distributor you'll be able to tell. Sound like the distributor is most likely the problem. If it is buy a Honda distributor not an aftermarket. Once a week I see a car with a brand new aftermarket dist. in them with drivability. It's hard to tell someone that the dist. they just paid $300 to have installed is bad and it's gonna cost $400 to put a new one in.
I have a whine noise also. As the rpms get higher, the noise becomes more pronounced. I held a long screwdriver to the alternator and I can hear the noise there big time. As for hearing a noise at the distributor, I cannot. I guess the bearning in the alternator is pooched. Could this also explain why my speedomoeter in the cluster falls down to zero, even when I am driving down the road?
