h22 fears........
i have a 97 Ex coupe 5spd. i really wanna put a JDM accord H22 in. i am just affraid of the time this could take. i cant seem to find a detailed set of instuctions on the exact mods and pieces i will need to purchase. I am a mechanic and have performed alot of serious customization and moderate fabrication..its just i cant have any major downtime as this is my current only car. if i can get some serious instructions then i am confident i coudl do the swap in 2 days. thanx for any help..
It can be done in a weekend, but you'll need a couple experienced people, all the parts, a lot of tools, and some extra $ just in case **** happens.
If you're planning on doing this yourself, I would try to allow one full week. You never know how long it will take or what kind of problems you might run into. Buy a bus pass I guess?

it all depends on your car and your knowledge of the swap...my car was obd2 and we had some issues with the distributor swapping from obd2 to obd1...the wiring alone took a few days in my situation as we had to try to figure out what went where...but...i've heard of this swap getting done on a saturday and sunday before as well...

^ it is expensive that's why if you buy someone an h22 accord already done that was swapped properly you are way ahead of the game. i agree though that you may encounter someone elses headaches with a swap, but that's why you test drive the car and inquire about who did the swap and try to buy from honest people.
why hate on the accords?

Quote, originally posted by CaseTested »

@KG:
Points are valid and well taken on professional conversion purchase.........but, have your mechanic (if you are not one) give the vehicle a 100% going over......top to bottom, inside and out! That includes, but not limited to compression testing, smog checks, etc.
On an intesting similar topic..........My neighbor, Paul, an owner of a Mercedes only shop here in Baton Rouge, recently (about a 3 years ago) purchased a used black(circa '89) Turbocharged V-6 Ferrari 328......(professionally built in Houston). An absolutely exquisite work of 'automotive art'! Never-the-less, it took him nearly a year to work out the few final tuning flaws in his shop and on the dyno! BTW....... it cost him little more than a new Honda Accord!

Lets see now(?)........@$2,500 for a USDM spec H22a (lets keep it smog legal!) plus another @$500-$1,000 for other parts and some professional tuning assistance and the dyno time involved to do it .....Expensive little ponies, don't you think?.........and still not even a thoroughbred!
Also, who in their right mind wants someone else's home garage butchered headaches..... (buy someones old POS car???.......don't even think about it fool! ) ....when you can create your own set of problems!
.......and BTW.......even then, you will always be outclassed by something like a middle-aged socker-mom in the likes of her BMW SUV, IS300 wagon or GS300/400!!!!!

Save your money and buy a used S2000 if you really want a Honda sports car!.........your old car and the money involved in this conversion would make a healthy down payment......and keep your payments low!

What you have to understand is that when competant people use an OBD1 motor on an OBD1 car with all the correct parts, it works really smoothly
Unlike using an OBD2 H22 with a totally hacked OBD1 H23 harness going into an OBD2 Accord using an OBD1 automatic ECU (ala Nick H)
Its actually not that hard of a swap, you just need to do a few minor mods to make it all fit
Basically its like this:
Make it easy for your self and get a total swap from HMotorsOnline, you need to grind down each side of the drivers side engine mount untill it fits correctly and run wires dirrectly to your ecu for the Knock sensor, Vtec pressure and vtec sol... 4 whole wires I believe... or maybe 5 I dont really remember. I try not to think about my last H22A swap it makes me angry
you will also need a prelude power steering line if you hope to keep PS... and the prelude radiator hoses
I cant remember exactly why we didn put A/C back in the car but im pretty sure it will work

^you can use a 97+ lude bracket and keep the accord p/s pump and line that way i got to keep my aem pulley too.
just fyi..i have almost 2yrs on my swap, 26k, and it makes 182whp with bolt-ons and a tuned apexi VAFC. it's great, it's just that it's time for me to move on.

Young fellow.......Since you can evidently read....Read this:
Don't try to read between the lines! ......and don't even try to put words into my post that don't exist!
I don't hate Accords....... I have a '97 myself.... I actually like them just exactly for what they are: A nice little, very dependable, economical around town sport-sedan that makes an excellent, comfortable daily driver!. I'm sure you know that being an owner of one yourself!
It is my wife that doesn't like my Accord at all ........(ever since that van side-swiped her while she was driving it)....nor the Suburban for that matter - too Big! She loves and drives her '86 Mustang GT most of the time.... and if she isn't driving that, she's driving her Saturn SW2 wagon ......she calls it her "shopping cart"! (She thinks that some models of radar detectors are a sort of a super-market detection device!)
My youngest son, on the other hand, thinks that my Accord is great.......he drives an Escort ZX2 though.
My eldest son will have nothing to do with any anything automotive save big Ford trucks!.......God help me!......I give up!

i guess all i am saying it is not that big a deal to but a h22 in a accord and have it running correctly. IMO my swap put my car up to par on how it should have performed straight from the factory(just like the accord sir). I agree that anything over 250 hp should be left to the rear wheel drives. But then again it is fun smoking some big v8's with an accord you know the old vw sleeper apeal.

OT: im not trying to pick a fight, but dude, CaseTested, idk what ur deal is. this isnt the bike forum....secondly, if uve never swaped a honda motor before, dont make projections just based on ur work w/ euro fords (ive never activly been involved in a swap, so i dont start saying stuff about it)....you can make race cars outa an "econo box" too, just check the events/racing forums.....and finally, im hoping ur like 40 yrs old +, being that ur calling everyone "young fellow"
im not trying to be a hater, just been a stressfull week......but its good to have such mechanically inclined people on the forum, cause you probably know way more than most of us (at least me) will ever know
that aside, just from what ive heard/experienced from my friends, expect the unexpected...even though its VERY POSSIBLE to do the swap in a weekend, you never now (i know im just repeating what everyone else said, but i had to make this post somewhat technical, ya know.....)

Now all he needs is some money, all the parts, a couple of competent, experienced mechanics, a fully equiped garage .......and another car.... for a week or more .......(and then some more money).......... It WILL be major downtime!
I really don't plan or look forward to swapping out the engine in my Accord any time soon.........There's just too much garbage (wiring, computer box, hoses, AC, smog devices, recertification, etc.) involved just for another 50-60 horsepower or so increase. (Now if it was for another 100+ hp......I might have to think about it.)
Good Luck to this kid........he's going to need it!
On an interestng side note......My last conversion was a Ford Cosworth BDG 2 litre (280 hp @9600 rpm) replacing a tired old 1.6 litre Lotus-Ford Twin Cam (160 hp @7800 rpm) ......and the damm thing took almost two full weeks!!!. Excuse me sir, you need to check yourself. I don't think anyone here asked you about your life story and your bloody Brit racing swap history. Nor did anyone ask you how you liked your Accord, and whether you wanted to do a swap in it.
You have obviously never done this swap, so why are you even rolling your 2 cents (or Pounds) in?
BACK ON TRACK:
This swap will not be hard at all. It CAN be done in an afternoon, or it can take a year. The best bet it to research, and source the parts you will need beforehand.

CaseTested, You are by far the most annoying member that i have seen in a while. It is not because your posts are not informative but they are not helping. When you bash on what everyone in this forum drives and tell them that there is not chance that we will have a fast car which is not true, case in point is the member 2point6 who has a really fast one and kentucky accord who is equally as fast.
OT: he is the knowtommorow311 of old guys who think they kick *** cause they can work on engines that were designed w/o having to worry about electronics or emissions
whatever casetested. Anyone that can read and has a little bit of knowledge in auto mechanics, electrical work simple wiring, strength, and time. then this swap is incredibly easy... (comparitivly speaking of course.)
lol, you must have a lot of time on your hands.
Maybe with all of your spare time you should try this h22 swap in your accord. Afterward, you can reflect on how it took minimal effort and time to absolutely transform your "nice little, very dependable, economical around town sport-sedan" into something much more fun to drive, while still retaining the "comfortable daily driver" aspect entirely.
Yes you can make faster cars. Yes there will always be something faster than your car, or your bike. Yes this is an Accord forum. Lets keep thinking "Accordingly."
Cheers.
